_________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 26 - October 6, 1999 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 26th Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. This newsletter features some new info on the forthcoming Nir- vana boxed set, as well as a full update on the latest activities by the Foo Fighters. And as always, the latest updates to The Internet Nirvana Fan Club are described in detail. First off, I can share an interesting story about my website getting mentioned on MTV ... Note 1: This newsletter was updated on September 26 1999, adding some additional news that didn't make it to the first released revision. Note 2: This newsletter was, on it's September 24 release date, only sent out to a handful of people due to technical difficulties. Hopefully this time around it will reach all of you. It was put on the website this day, however, so you might have read the newsletter already. This third revision contains some minor changes though. Thanks for your patience! ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ First of all I have to announce that The Internet Nirvana Fan Club was recently mentioned on MTV. Apparently, this happened dur- ing the show Bytesize when it was airing on MTV UK & Ireland on the evening of September 20th 1999. This particular show is being broadcast several times a day, usually, so it's possible that the website was mentioned more than once. The teletext page for the show, 'James Hyman's Net Minute', also features a review of The Internet Nirvana Fan Club. The review was in the September 13 update of the 'Net Minute', available on page 206 of MTV UK & Ireland and MTV Europe's teletext services. The review is very positive, mentioning that; "Close to 1.130.000 hits proves Rasmus must be doing a good job and the site follows obvious rules of a successful site - easy navigation, plenty of information, links and regular updates." Barry from Ireland who notified me of this men- tioned that in 'Bytesize', they showed a picture of Nirvana and a shot of the nirvanaclub main page - while, I assume, commenting on the site. If anyone happens to have a recording of this on video, please let me know. Special thanks to MTV and James Hyman for mentioning my site, and to Barry for bringing this to my attention. On the 11th of September there was a big chat session for users of the Internet Nirvana Fan Club discussion boards and/or the web- site in general. The chat was pretty entertaining and many regular users of the website joined in to chat away. Some of those stayed for more than ten hours while I only stayed for a couple of hours myself. Anyway, a full log of the chat will be put online shortly. Matthew Bonato, a supporter of the Internet Nirvana Fan Club, recently created some amusing T-shirts for himself and his daugh- ter. In a creative drawing, Matthew wrote "Nirvanaclub is better than sex" on a white T-shirt and his daughter had "Nirvanaclub is better than milk" written on her outfit - which looks very amus- ing. The idea behind these T-shirts was originally brought upon myself on the Bulletin Board and thus Matthew was the first, and so far only, to actually go through with the idea. I want to thank him for that! To view these very funny images, head on over to the main page of Nirvanaclub: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/ ] The 'Movies and TV shows related to Nirvana' section was up- dated, as always, with a bunch of new info and a few corrections here and there. This page is really growing to be quite large. And again thanks to everyone who've submitted info to this section. Check it out: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/movapp.htm ] The NFC FAQ was also updated. I decided to split the FAQ up in two parts, each part holding 60 different questions and the an- swers to them. This way, it should be a lot faster for people with slow connections to open the FAQ and now you don't have to download all of it, just to get the answer to one question for ex- ample. A new question/answer was also added, giving a theory on why many copies of "Incesticide" lack the infamous liner notes by Kurt Cobain. FAQ: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] The 'Facts and Information' section was also updated, adding a few new links to useful resources and fixing a few of dead links. The Facts and Info section: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/ ] The lucky winners of the 3rd NFC Competition are: Michael Jen- sen who won the first prize, a 128-page Nirvana book. The winner of the second prize, a Foo Fighters promo, is Brandon Poynter and finally, Laura Palachuk got the third prize; a double-LP bootleg of Nirvana's 1991 show in Rome. Congratulations! I will most likely have a 4th NFC Competition up and running by the time you get the next newsletter. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/contest/ ] For the first time in at least a year the 'Chat Transcripts' section was finally updated. The general page introducing the transcripts was changed to look better, and a few spelling errors were fixed. I also managed to find an unedited log of the December 17, 1996 chat session with Duff of Guns N' Roses. While this is not too Nirvana related, I did actually ask him if he liked Nirvana and things like that. The log is pretty funny, actually, and much more interesting than the official transcript which was heavily edited. Another brief transcript of a celebrity chat I went to was added as well. Check it out. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/chatold.htm ] The Discussion Board was updated as well; as yet another new forum was added for the masses. The new forum, which is basi- cally intended for musicians and songwriters, is thereby the 5th forum on the board. It is the plan that musicians come to this fo- rum to share ideas for songs, lyrics and put up links to their music, so everyone interested can get to hear it. So, now there is a forum for discussing Nirvana, one for bootleg trading, another for dis- cussing guitars and other equipment, and even one for topics that really has nothing to do with Nirvana. The songwriters' forum is currently up on a trial basis, so it is not 100% certain that it will stay online. We'll see! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/ubb/ ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ A previously unsurfaced video of Nirvana's 10/24/91 show in San Diego CA, at a record store, has now turned up among Nirvana traders. The video, which is still only owned by a few traders, features a nice performance of 6 songs in front of a small audience. I have personally not gotten a copy of it yet so I can't share more details on the actual video. It is, however, worth to mention that an audio part (taken from the video) has been out among Nirvana bootleg traders for several years. Bowen Rodkey submitted the following interesting story; "I was looking through the Guinness Book of World Records, year 2000 edition and I saw that Nirvana had a world record! It was a record for 'The most popular posthumous [Kurt being dead] band in the United States' - with 'MTV Unplugged' and 'From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah'". Thanks to Bowen Rodkey for this story! As I mentioned in the last newsletter, MTV are currently looking for people who were in the audience for Nirvana's 1993 MTV Unplugged in New York. Here are some more details, explaining why they need your help; "We here at MTV are working on a new documentary series tentatively entitled, 'iWitness' (as in Eyewit- ness). The premiere show will concentrate on Nirvana's MTV Un- plugged performance. The show will literally revolve around peo- ple who witnessed the performance firsthand and will reflect on what they saw and how they felt about it. That being said, we are desperately looking for Nirvana fans that attended the Unplugged performance to get their reflections on the show. All interviews used for the show will be on-camera; our show is greatly inter- view-driven, so it's necessary that all interview subjects appear on camera to fully convey the person's thoughts, emotions, and con- victions about the subject matter discussed. Just to give you a little more insight into the show--this will concentrate on what many consider to be one of the most unique and significant perform- ances ever to air; it will focus on how Kurt and the rest of the band made all observers present--executives, fans, other musi- cians--feel on that night, how they gave many viewers what they least expected, disregarding any expectations of a greatest hits show, and turned it into a true artistic experience." "We consider the fan's point-of-view essential in making this premiere episode of 'iWitness' work. If anyone is interested in participating in the show, and you were part of the studio audience at the Unplugged show, then please e-mail me with your age and phone number at [ Jason.Arambulo@mtv.com ] or call me at: (212) 846-5635 (you can call collect). Be part of re-living a defin- ing moment in Nirvana's career and help set the viewers straight!" Jason Arambulo. Associate Producer, MTV News And Specials. Matt Stewart submitted the following story to the NFC newsletter; "KROQ (106.7 on the west coast) did a labor day '500 best songs of the 90's.' special. I listened today and just happened to catch the last 2 songs. The 2nd was Red Hot Chili Peppers' classic 'Un- der the bridge' and #1 of the 90's, voted by the fans, was 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana." As for other Nirvana songs in the Top 100, "In Bloom" came in at place #88 - "Lithium" on place #85 - "About a Girl" on place #59 - "Come as you are" on place #15 and nine other Nirvana songs were also in this Top 500 list. Benoit wanted me to notify you of the following: "With a few friends, we have created a French Nirvana mailing-list for all the French Nirvana fans. The goal of this group is to build the biggest and the most informative Nirvana site in the French language." For more info, go to: [ http://www.i-france.com/anotherrule/ ] On the next album by Seattle grunge rockers The Melvins, a cover of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' will apparently be present. VH-1 reported that Leif Garret did the cover. Thanks to Tracy, Sarah and a few others for this info. Check NFC Newsletter #19 for more info about this cover that was now confirmed by VH-1. According to the people behind the 'Nirvana Live Guide' the ac- tual title of a song known among collectors as "In His Hands" or "In His Room" is really called "Verse Chorus Verse". As you may know, another song also carries this title ("Verse Chorus Verse"). However, this song, present on the 'No Alternative' compilation, was born with the name "Sappy", though supposedly it was re- named to "Verse Chorus Verse" sometime around 1992 or early 1993. Even with that in mind, Kris Sproul of 'NLG' and others claim that another song has this exact same title. A fact mostly based on the surfacing of a bootleg T-shirt, featuring a set list for the 04/17/91 show, handwritten by Kurt Cobain. The set list men- tions "Verse Chorus Verse" around the place where the song, re- ferred to as "In His Hands", was played. The other song from 'No Alternative', let's call it "Sappy", was not played at this show. All this is indeed very confusing, especially since it's not customary for any band to give the same title to two different songs. Though, at this point a lot of 'evidence' supporting the name change has been put on the table by Mr. Kris Sproul and others. So I am now somewhat convinced of it. Apart from the evidence the bootleg T-shirt provides, the 'Live Guide' people lean towards the fact that Charles R. Cross' book about the Nevermind sessions mention both a song called "Sappy" and a song called "Verse Chorus Verse" being recorded during those sessions. Kris Sproul also added recently that; "The shirt was purchased long ago at 'Positively 4th Street Records' in Olympia, a store where Kurt used to sell t-shirts when he needed extra money. It is likely that it's just a homemade shirt Kurt sold to the store. But the main thing to consider is that it was bought long ago, probably before any recordings of the song in question even ap- peared on bootlegs and long before anyone would have any reason to fake something like this." - "Also, the front of the shirt has a flyer for the 1/19/90 show in Olympia. This flyer is unavailable elsewhere on the net, to my knowledge." So, these facts should help improve the credibility of the T-shirt. In any case, this surely is one discussion that seems to never have an end. More info here: [ http://happening.digitalnirvana.net/mysteries/nirmyst3.html ] [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000573.html ] I mentioned in a recent newsletter that the complete 01/01/91 stu- dio session had surfaced. Now it seems to have entered the boot- leg circles, sourced from the same guy who brought up info about the session's non-surfaced songs - such as an instrumental version of "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter". At the time of writing, I have not yet received a copy myself but hopefully I'll get one soon :) [ http://happening.digitalnirvana.net/mysteries/nirmyst2.html ] Short soundclips of all the songs from the 01/01/91 session are now available: [ http://happening.digitalnirvana.net/updates.html ] The original Nirvana FAQ, created in 1994 by Jeff McRae, has now changed hands again, as it was taken over recently by Mike Ziegler of 'The Happening'. In June 1998 it was handed over to David Perle who updated it a couple of times and never touched it again, leaving it unedited for about 15 months. Here is the new URL for the Nirvana FAQ: [ http://happening.digitalnirvana.net/nirvanafaq/faq1.html ] In the September 18th issue of the British magazine "Kerrang!" there is some interesting info about the forthcoming Nirvana boxed set; "As well as the new Foo Fighters record, Dave Grohl will also be involved in the release of the long awaited Nirvana box set. Although the Foo's main man was initially scheduled to oversee the project, which brings together rare tracks, unreleased demos and out-takes, with erstwhile companion Krist Novoselic, it now seems that he has handed the reins over to Nirvana's former record company, Geffen. Dave Grohl said 'There's a lot of weird shit that people might want to hear' he says of the box set, which is scheduled for release next year. 'The last song we ever recorded will be on there, I think it's called I know your right.'" This story was also published in a number of other magazines, including Melody Maker who added a little extra from Grohl; " ... they're working on a box-set but I don't know exactly what's going on with it. Someone else is compiling all the material and rounding up some pretty obscure stuff I didn't even know existed. Nirvana was a band 3-4 years before I ever joined and I think there's some really weird old shit that people would be very entertained to hear. I know that the last song we ever recorded will probably be on there. I don't know what they're calling it, I don't even know if there ever was a title. I think it might be called 'I know you're right.'" This was from Melody Maker, September 4, 1999 issue. The song Dave is referring to is actually called "You've Got No Right" and was recorded at Bob Lang's studio in Seattle, WA sometime in late January 1994. The song includes the lyric "You know your right", hence Dave mixing this up with the song's title. The same session also yielded an early instrumental version of the Foo Fighters song "Exhausted" which could very well be released on the boxed set as well. Unfortunately, the session is currently not among bootleg traders. Thanks goes out to Mark O' Conner, Rich Cracknell, Chris Lomas and others for passing on this story. As I hinted in NFC Newsletter #25, it seems that the 'Bleach' re- release will NOT happen this year, despite 1999 being the 10-year anniversary for the album. This is backed up by the statement I put in last newsletter, from Matt of Sub Pop, and a recent story by CDnow: " The planned 10th anniversary reissue of Nirvana's debut indie LP, Bleach, won't see the bottom of a CD bin in 1999 as Sub Pop Records, the label on which the album originally surfaced in 1989, is now eyeing a 2000 release date. According to a source, bassist Krist Novoselic is currently working with label reps to decide which bonus tracks should be on the album along with gathering liner notes for its release. A Nirvana box set has also been in the works. " This story was courtesy of CDNow/ Allstar News, September 24 1999. Thanks to RyDeHa@cs.com for the info. Andrew Amirault, whom I've mentioned several times before, is once again running a protest against MTV to get them to pay at- tention to the infamous 'Kurt Cobain murder theories' that An- drew is preaching about. Despite his last protest being a total fail- ure, Andrew is now organizing yet another protest - towards the exact same MTV offices on Broadway in New York City, NY; "This is to announce a *worldwide protest* for Kurt Cobain's murder on Saturday, November 6, 1999. I [Amirault] will be lead- ing a protest at 1515 Broadway in Times Square, the Manhattan headquarters of MTV (where the last protest was held on January 16, 1999). The hours will be 12noon to 3pm, EST." "If you have- n't been able to make protests in the past, this is your opportunity to take a public stance on Kurt's tragic murder, and the uncon- scionable cover-up of his murder, as exemplified by MTV's bla- tant and ongoing support of Courtney Love." So there you have it. Maybe someone will actually turn up this time. Anything is possi- ble I suppose! [ http://www.tiac.net/users/tobya/updates.html ] In the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, there is another arti- cle about Nirvana. This article is about the greatest tours of the nineties and of course Nirvana's fall/winter tour promoting "Nev- ermind" is included. The article features a picture of Kurt, taken at a Boston 1991 show, and some other concert pictures. Thanks to Jena S. and a couple of others for telling me about this RS article. Read it: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/rs_1099.htm ] I recently mentioned Nirvana being on the cover of the September 1999 issue of Spin Magazine. Well, now that I have the actual magazine I can share some more details about it. On the cover there is a collage with four pictures, with one of them being of Kurt Cobain. Then, on the contents page there is another large im- age of Cobain, in black and white. This leads up to Spin's article: 'The Greatest Albums Of The 90s', featuring Nirvana's "Never- mind" on the number one spot - as reported earlier. It begins with a large picture of the band, from the shooting of the album's cover art, along with a detailed review of the album complemented by comments from Krist and Dave. "In Utero" is found on place #18; "This poisonous sequel to the hardly saccharine Nevermind was heard as a fame-spurning volley in the early nineties alternawars, but In Utero makes more sense as an honest attempt to portray life with Kurt Cobain's famous stomach - the measure of beauty available to someone rolling around on a hotel bed, wavering be- tween pain, spew and fog." - "The facilitator was post-punk ideo- logue Steve Albini, who treats the recording studio as a knife sharpening device. Loud drums, unadorned vocals, and guitar and bass lurching in dead air produced 'as close to the sound that I hear in my head [as] I've ever found,' Cobain once said. Krist Novoselic remembers Albini 'looking through the glass, standing by the tape deck with his arms crossed, just staring at us, and we were like, 'Okay, here you go, Steve.' We were bombing these songs off - we showed him we had the goods'. 'In recordings that are done quickly', says Grohl, 'you get this quality of, I don't know, desperation.'" - thus the comments from Spin's choice of putting 'In Utero' on place #18 at this list. Apart from this, the magazine doesn't offer much else than an extremely odd choice of other 'best albums of the Nineties', and on top of that the maga- zine features a stunning 125 (approx.) pages of FULL-page ads. Thus, of a 208-page magazine like Spin - more than 125 of those pages are nothing but ads (most of which have nothing to do with music). Even though they put up a nice article about 'Nevermind', I would not recommend buying this magazine. Read the article: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/spin_magazine.htm ] The Nirvana section of Krist Novoselic's website, Murky Slough, seems to be entirely gone now - after going through a couple of changes since it's birth. The section didn't offer much apart for some brief statements on future projects and legal issues. This could be because the nirvana.com opening isn't far away - or it could be an entire different reason. We'll keep you posted :) ______________ - Misc. News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ On 9/9/99 this years MTV Video Music Awards took place in New York, NY. It was a grand show featuring most of today's best selling artists, giving away MTV's famous 'moon men'. One interesting highlight was when Mira Sorvino and Freddie Prinze Jr. presented the award for 'Best Male Video'. Before pre- senting the nominees, Miss Sorvino mentioned some of her all time favorite artists and among those she named Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. It was a nice show, though it was pretty much ruined by Lauren Hill winning the award 'Best video of the year'. At least it was the last award of a show that was good up until that point ;) Thanks to Chris Z., Jesse, Rob Salisbury and others for the news. The Foo Fighters have found a new guitarist who is to replace Franz Stahl that left the band, as reported in earlier newsletters. The new guitarist is Chris Shiflett, formerly of 'No use for a name', '22 Jacks', and 'Me First'. "He is a local guitarist from Los Angeles, California. For those of you who are wondering how he got the job, the Foo's had open auditions. They auditioned eve- ryone who was able to get through and get on the tryout list. It was a real open audition process. The band is in the process of rehearsing right now and teaching Chris the new material. Just for clarification, Chris is a touring member of the band." Thanks to MTV and the Foo Fighters Internet Archive for this news story. MTV have a Foo Fighters special online at the moment, with info on the band and their forthcoming album. It's pretty interesting. MTV: [ http://www.mtv.com/news/gallery/f/foo/foofeature99.html ] Now that we're speaking of the Foo Fighters, they have appar- ently finished shooting the video for their first new single "Learn To Fly". In addition, the band has done a few live shows to warm up for the album, including a surprise gig at the Troubador in Los Angeles, CA and a gig in Providence, RI. As I reported in a previ- ous newsletter, the band also performed at the September 10 1999 Gravity Games festival. News courtesy of the FF Internet Archive. In the September 11, 1999 issue of the British "Kerrang!" maga- zine, there is an interesting story about Dave and the Foo Fighters; "Grohl has revealed that he suffered panic attacks while recording the band's forthcoming album 'There is nothing left to lose' at his home studio in Virginia. 'I think in a three-and-a-half year period we've had four or five months off', he exclusively tells Kerrang! 'We've made touring a huge, necessary part of our lives. Some- times in Virginia I would wake up in the morning and have a panic attack because I'd been in the same bed for two weeks and there was no room service!'" The article goes on to mention the recruitment of the new guitarist Chris Shiflett and some info on their touring; "We're definitely going to be touring but I don't know what the actual plans are yet. We'll probably wind up in Europe in October. Then we'll start a real tour in November - the full worldwide onslaught! It's going to be great to get back out there", Dave Grohl notes. News courtesy of Kerrang! Magazine. Speaking of Kerrang, in the same issue there is an interview with Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns where they talk briefly about Kurt Cobain. Kerrang asks: "Daniel, you've been compared to Kurt Cobain throughout your career. Can you now relate to this situation?" Daniel replied: "Yeah, but I think the distorted mind created by his drug use would dramatically distort what is happen- ing, and a lot of his problems were down to drugs. But you can definitely relate to the pressures of it a lot more once you've ex- perienced something along the lines of what he was experiencing. He had it all on a much bigger level, though." Thanks to Kerrang! The first single off the forthcoming "There is nothing left to lose" by the Foo Fighters, "Learn To Fly", is now out on radio stations and will be released as a single soon. In fact it aired for the first time on Danish radio, September 24 1999 at 5:47 PM :) A very nice song, too. I know this is actually a Nirvana newsletter, but to finish off with FF, an apparent official Foo Fighters website opened early in last month. What is interesting in particular is that the popular Foo Fighters Internet Archive [FFIA], previously located at foofight- ers.net, is now just linking to the official site at foofighters.com. Thus, the huge number of files presented at the FFIA are now no longer online, at the time being at least. I believe, however, that the webmasters of FFIA are now co-running the official site and it is supported by the band and their management. Currently, the official site does not contain half as much as FFIA - though it does contain a number of interesting things. This includes never-before-seen pic- tures, rare sound clips, tour dates, the latest news and more. Visit the official Foo Fighters site here: [ http://www.foofighters.com/ ] Speaking of official sites, the sought after nirvana.com has finally been handed over to 'Nirvana, L.L.C' by the person who regis- tered the domain name in 1992, Lee Sherman. This will hopefully result in an official Nirvana site supported by the remaining band members. So far it is still unknown what the site will contain and when it will open, however I do know that the site was handed over to Nirvana, L.L.C. in early 1999 and that Krist is aware of it, as he put up a comment about it on his own site a little while ago. According to a recent article by All Star, the Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur was rumored to have quit the band and joined the Smashing Pumpkins instead, who recently lost their bassist. Their source stated; "This is a time for herself, to pursue a solo career, work on her photography, and she really wants to play." The day after this story broke, All Star reported that they had been con- tacted by Hole's label Geffen/Interscope who denied the rumors; "'Right now, as the band's spokesperson, anybody speaking on behalf of Melissa is erroneously doing so. Melissa has not left the group,' Dennis Dennehy, Hole's publicist. Interscope/ Geffen/ A&M, told us [Allstar] just an hour after the story broke." Story courtesy of Cdnow, Inc. and Allstar News.
