_______________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 23 - July 28, 1999 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 23rd Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. I have surely released a lot of newsletters lately, but that is proba- bly due to the fact I have a long vacation and therefore I've had time to update the website quite a bit, and collect Nirvana related news. So I hope you enjoy this newsletter, which is not only packed with news about site updates and Nirvana, but also other interesting events in the world of music - such as Woodstock '99. ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The scripts handling the contest and the quiz on my site were modified to put an end to cheating. With the quiz, the names of those who get all 20 questions correct are automatically added to a 'winner' page. Some of these people actually had the nerve to submit their 20 winning answers over and over again, just submit- ting a different name each time. So both the actual winner and the one(s) sitting next to him/her would get their name listed on the page of winners. This method of cheating has been put to an end, as you can now only try the quiz once regardless of how many questions you answer correctly. Thus, you have to wait a little while before being able to try the quiz again. This also puts an end to freaks that absolutely must press the 'submit' button about six million times. Basically, the script handling the contest went through the same makeover so that you can only enter one name in a row to the contest. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/quiz.htm ] The script handling the addition of new e-mail addresses to these newsletters was also improved, to avoid false e-mail addresses being added to the list of subscribers. Now, upon signing up you will receive an e-mail containing an URL that you must go to in order to have the address added. Of course, this update is com- pletely irrelevant to you if you already subscribe to the newsletter! Old nfc newsletters here: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/newslet/ ] A couple of new links were added to the 'Facts and Information' section, and a new article was added to the 'Interviews and arti- cles' section of nirvanaclub.com. The new article is actually just biographies of Kurt, Krist and Dave - from the April 1999 issue of Circus Magazine. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/ ] There was a small update to the movie gallery, where I added a link to a different Nirvana site - offering links to a very large number of movie files with Nirvana. Special thanks to 'ringsongs4' for the link and for creating this great page, check it out some- time! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/movies.htm ] Even more info about the fabled Pennyroyal Tea single was added to the NFC FAQ. Not just some info, but also scans of the single's matrix number and a scan of the Pennyroyal Tea promo was in- cluded as well, courtesy of digitalnirvana. If you want more info about this rare single you should definitely check the NFC FAQ and get details on it. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] I am still getting a lot of new additions to the 'Movies and TV shows somehow related to Nirvana' section, which is really nice. This section is getting larger and larger, though I must stress again that you should be careful with not submitting irrelevant info, and info about books which doesn't belong to this particular section. Thanks a lot. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/movapp.htm ] The section with links was briefly updated. You can now submit links to sites promoting Hole or Courtney Love. This section of the link page replaces the "Nirvana-related" one that was basically un-necessary with there already being a "Nirvana" section. Now you can submit a link for either of these categories; Nirvana, Foo Fighters, The Methodists, Sweet 75, Hole/Courtney Love, Enter- tainment & Miscellaneous. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/links/ ] The section, "Nirvana for your PC", was updated. The index of this section was changed and made more detailed, and some new files were added. This includes 3 new Nirvana skins for WinAMP, by Bert Zaremba. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/compstuff.htm ] The 11th poll: "Did you ever see Nirvana live in concert?" ended: Yes - 256 votes (20%) No - 1041 votes (80%) So, as the poll shows, only 256 out of the 1297 who voted got to see Nirvana live in concert. This is probably due to the fact that a lot of people didn't start listening to Nirvana until after Kurt died, thus making it impossible for these fans to see the band live. Even though I started listening to them in 1993, I sadly never got to see them live and they only visited this country once - which was in 1992. The next poll will be online soon. Thanks a lot for voting! Despite this newsletter being sent out to some ten thousand peo- ple, only two of those volunteered to take some pictures at the re- creation of the 1994 candlelight memorial in Seattle, for "A Leo- nard Cohen Afterworld". These pictures will be scanned and put on the nirvanaclub.com website as soon as possible, so all of you who didn't have a chance to go can get a view of what the event was like, by studying these pictures. Special thanks to Sara and Krysta for attending this, and for taking pictures that I could put online. Krysta did mention that the event was very 'lame' and she felt it was pointless and disrespectful to Kurt. Of course I can't comment on this since I wasn't there myself, but if you attended this event and would like to give a 'review' or a story about your trip, feel free to e-mail it to me. [ webmaster@nirvanaclub.com ] Not only Krysta was harmed by this recreation of the vigil; Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, both former Nirvana members, have also expressed negative comments about it; "Last week, former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, along with Cobain's estate, got wind of a planned contest promotion that New Line Cinema had prepared to entice Seattle-area people to partici- pate in the scene. Naturally, they weren't too pleased about it. Through a press release, Grohl stated, 'The real problem is that the average kid listening to the radio or reading the paper has no idea that we're not involved with this ... offering door prizes as a means of getting people to 'look grunge' for the camera.' No- voselic added, 'It's the same old story, people trying to exploit everything Nirvana stood for -- and continues to stand for -- just to turn a buck.' A representative of the Estate of Kurt Cobain also weighed in on the subject, adding, 'we are not participating in this film. We find it without merit and boring.'" This story was also courtesy of MTV News, July 27 1999. [ http://www.mtv.com/ ] Personally I don't know what to make of this. Though, the words "It's just a movie" comes to mind, and as Sean E. Markland, prop- erty master for the film commented; "We are not in any way attempting to recreate the memorial service in any way that deni- grates the memory of Kurt Cobain. If anything we're trying to do as much justice to that time as possible." I want to stress that I am not being paid to advertise for this movie, I'm simply passing on the news I have received concerning it. Thanks for understanding. The 'door prizes' mentioned in the story above were, in the plans at least, five hundred prizes that included: snowboards, concert tickets, movie posters, home videos, T-shirts, mountain bikes and concert tickets. The approximate retail value of the prizes ranges from $10 to $500. The approximate total retail value of the all prizes is $3,900. [ http://www.angelfire.com/wa/afterworld/ ] For more information on the movie and this recreation event, please refer to NFC Newsletter #22. If you didn't receive it, just get it here: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/newslet/uknews22.txt ] A brief review of the event, written by Sara who attended, is al- ready available here: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/aworld1.htm ] The Internet Nirvana Fan Club is mentioned in the French book: "Internet : Le Web des vedettes" written by Corinne de Vailly. Apparently this is a collection of URL's for all sorts of websites, and under 'Nirvana' they referred to nirvanaclub.com. Thanks so much to Samuel Breton [ http://surf.to/sammm ] for bringing this tidbit to my attention. Remember to contact me if you see the site mentioned in a book, in a magazine or a Radio/Television show. ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ First I must correct a small mistake I made in the last newsletter, when stating that the video of Nirvana's 12/87 show had been out among traders for about a year. I did say 'probably', since I was not sure about this, and as it turns out the video was indeed not out among traders until sometime in May or June of 1999. Today, the number of people with a copy is still very limited. Special thanks to Josh for correcting this mistake, and for giving additional info. Spin Magazine's current issue features Kurt Cobain on the cover. They voted Nirvana's "Nevermind" album as the number one album of the 90's, with P.J. Harvey on place #2. Nirvana and P.J. Harvey are the only group and recording artist to get two albums listed on Spin magazine's Top 90 of the decade. Nirvana's "In Utero" album was on place #18 in Spin's list. Courtesy of CNN. [ http://cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/News/9907/27/showbuzz/#story3 ] Now to a story that I found a little disturbing, and I'm sure you will find this offending too. Don't tell me I didn't warn you! -- According to Korey Harmon, the first line of the Eminem song "Cum on everyone", mentions Kurt Cobain. This exact line of the song is; "My favorite color is red, like the blood shed from Kurt Cobain's head when he shot himself dead." Obviously I haven't listened to the track myself to verify this, but considering his other 'lyrics' this one seems likely. I don't know about you, but even prior to this news arriving in my mailbox I sincerely and truly hated the Eminem hit "My name is" which I think is one of the worst songs of the decade. If you hate this 'artist' as much as me, you may find some comfort in the following story from Rolling Stone online; "Eminem took a fall on stage Sunday night in Hart- ford, Conn., midway through his performance at the New England Summer Jam, where he was performing with Redman and Nas in between Warped Tour appearances. 'Eminem fell because the stage was dark, it was wet and he was a little bit drunk,' said his manager, Paul Rosenberg. 'It was a six-foot drop, and he fell on his side.'" - indeed, an interesting story! This story confirms the rumor that Eminem is actually a guy and not a computer. I could have sworn it was entirely a computer making "My name is" . . . If you, for some reason, want to see the documentary "Kurt and Courtney" by Nick Broomfield, then here is your chance. The movie has been available on video in the US since January 1999, but now it is showing on Cinemax. Here are the showing times: Fri, Aug 6 10:00 PM MAX East Fri, Aug 6 1:00 AM MAX West Sun, Aug 15 1:30 AM MAX East Sun, Aug 15 4:30 AM MAX West Thu, Aug 26 5:20 AM MAX East Fri, Aug 27 8:20 AM MAX West Special thanks goes to Timothy McDermid for this News. One could wonder why the documentary is being broadcast in the mid- dle of the night every time, apart from the opening on August 6! I mentioned the "Nirvana Setlister" in the last newsletter. Liam, who created the program, wanted to add that he is creating a new section of the program devoted to info on various traders. So if you trade Nirvana, e-mail Liam [ ire32Land@aol.com ] with info such as the formats you can make, if you do 2:1 trades, your URL, your e-mail address etc. [ http://members.xoom.com/nirvanatns/ ] The re-creation of the 1994 candlelight vigil for Kurt Cobain that I mentioned earlier in this newsletter was also mentioned on MTV; "Kurt Cobain's 1994 candlelight memorial will be recreated in downtown Seattle on Friday for a scene in an upcoming movie." - "A large crowd of flannel-wearing and flower-carrying fans is ex- pected to gather at the Seattle Center to take part in the reenact- ment, which will figure into a film titled 'A Leonard Cohen Af- terworld,' starring Jared Leto of the TV series 'My So-Called Life.'" The story also mentions that the movie will star Selma Blair of "Cruel Intentions" fame. Story courtesy of MTV News. Now I don't know how relevant this story is, but recently on MTV Ricky Martin was selecting his favorite music videos. He picked Nirvana's "Lithium" as #8 and stated that he really loved Nirvana, and "we must do everything to keep their music alive". Right on! Tom Fletcher submitted the following story to me, which I figured could be used in this newsletter; "There's a book called 'About A Boy' by the English author Nick Hornby. It refers to Nirvana's music and mentions In Utero and Nevermind a lot. It also makes comparisons between the characters in the book & Kurt Cobain." ______________ - Misc. News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The Foo Fighters have finally found a new record company, to release their upcoming third album; "On Friday, the Foo Fighters announced that they have inked a deal with RCA Records, bring- ing an end to months of speculation about where the band would map out its musical future. The band had released its first two al- bums on Capitol Records and now plans to deliver its third to stores through RCA in November. 'It took nearly a year to make this decision,' front man Dave Grohl said in a statement announc- ing the move. 'But it feels great to be at a label that's willing to build up a really strong rock roster, as opposed to chasing what- ever's popular at the moment. Being at Capitol was wonderful, but we felt it was time to move on.' The move also sees Grohl's im- print, Roswell Records, move over to RCA." This move comes after The Foo Fighters recently ditched guitarist Franz Stahl, as reported in newsletter #21. Full story courtesy of MTV News. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and formerly of Nirvana produced the new album by Verbena, "Into The Pink". News courtesy of bks #3. Check Verbena's official site: [ http://www.verbenaband.com/ ] The last newsletter contained a little too much news about Hole, and these newsletters are actually not supposed to be about Hole at all, but merely mention important events in the life of Kurt Co- bain's widow Courtney Love. Hole just finished their current tour in Vancouver, Canada where Courtney stated that it would be the last show for a long time. Instead, they are rumored to be begin- ning the work on a follow-up album to 1998's "Celebrity Skin". For the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, Hole have been nominated in the category "Best Cinematography In A Video" for their "Malibu" video. Korn received no less than 9 nominations for their "Freak on a Leash" video. Finally, Eminem was nominated in the "Best Male Video" category .............. god knows why. Now to another story on Hole, courtesy of Petter Stolba. "On a festival in Sweden, Courtney Love stripped and asked the crowd to come up on the stage. When the concert was over, a 19-year old girl was found trampled to death about 400 meters from the stage. Courtney Love stated that while she feels horrible for the poor girl, she would take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for her death." Courtney's act with stripping and asking the crowd to join her on stage was used during a lot of Hole's shows for this past tour. Another thing she would do was to pull up someone on stage from the audience and give him - or her - the guitar; "At Edgefest in Molson Park in Barrie, Ontario, Canada when Court- ney Love pulled some people up on stage, she pulled a male from the audience (she was usually only pulling girls up). At the end of her set she gave him her guitar saying: 'This is the first time I've ever given a guy my guitar, don't sell it or anything.'" Thanks to Jeremy Abbas for this story. That's it for Hole in this newsletter, which will not bring every possible story about Courtney or Hole. The 1999 30-year anniversary of the Woodstock festival, on July 23 to 25, seemed to be a success despite the media's focus on the incidents with vandalism and bonfires; "NY state troopers in riot gear and firefighters swarmed onto the field where Woodstock '99 was ending, after hundreds of concertgoers turned into vandals, starting fires and looting. What began as scattered bonfires toward the end of the Red Hot Chili Peppers festival-closing set escalated into several major infernos." This story was courtesy of CNN. Full story: [ http://cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Music/9907/26/woodstock.03/ ] What this story omits tell about is the great performances by suc- cessful bands such as Metallica, Rage against the machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Creed, Offspring and Megadeth who closed the festival late Sunday night. Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine dedicated the last song of the evening to former Megadeth drum- mer Gar Samuelson who passed away on July 14th 1999. He was just 41. A big thanks to ZTV Sweden for airing most of the festi- val live, though occasionally interrupted by extremely annoying commercial breaks. Here's a detailed review of Saturday night's lineup of three rock/metal bands at the East Stage; "Almost as soon as Limp Bizkit took to the main stage, the audi- ence went nuts, and the raging vibe of the band's aggressive mate- rial transferred into a mean vibe almost as soon as it wafted into the audience. With guitarist Wes Borland sporting a monkey vis- age painted on his face and Durst screeching through his mic, Limp Bizkit drove the audience into a reckless frenzy with slam- ming versions of 'Counterfeit' and 'Just Like This.' By the time Limp played 'Break Stuff,' audience members were in the mood to do just that, ripping up the plywood boards that gated the pay- per-view camera tower, and passing the 4' x 8' sheets over their heads. The situation worsened as other people began to jump on top of the plywood in an attempt to literally crowd surf on the makeshift rafts. As the crowd began throwing everything they could get their hands on, Durst cajoled the crowd by reminding the audience that 'there are no rules' and even inciting a certain amount of rowdiness by telling the crowd not to mellow out, be- cause 'that's what Alanis Morissette had you do.' With Durst's mic intermittently cutting out, Limp Bizkit charged through 'Nookie' and 'Faith,' which ended with Durst attempting to mount one of the plywood sheets that had been passed up to the front of the stage. After an extended, 45-minute break in which organizers attempted to restore some semblance of order and treat the scores of injured concertgoers, Rage Against The Machine besieged the stage with 'No Shelter,' although the sound was no- ticeably turned down from Bizkit's ear-ringing decibels, perhaps to diffuse the potentially dangerous mix. But whereas Durst's per- formance seemed wrapped in arena-rock stereotypes, the pain and passion in frontman Zack de la Rocha's face during 'People of the Sun,' 'Vietnow,' and 'Bulls on Parade' readily conveyed the depth and the conviction behind Rage's politically minded mate- rial. Dedicating 'Freedom' to imprisoned American Indian activist Leonard Peltier, Zack held his right arm aloft -- which bore a black bandana with a red star - then bounded across the stage in unison with guitarist Tom Morello, who shredded the number with bursts of feedback and distortion." "Looking every bit the part of the elder statesman of metal that they are, Metallica rumbled through a 90-minute set that featured such vintage slabs as 'Master of Puppets' and 'For Whom the Bell Tolls.' Capitalizing on the mellowed vibe provided by the rain, Metallica's blues-ridden rendition of Bob Seger's 'Turn the Page' seemed to perfectly capture the riotous events of Saturday night, even as 'Fuel,' 'Enter Sandman,' and 'Battery' sent the crowd off in preparation for the third and final day of Woodstock '99."
