_________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 09 - August 20, 1998 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction ============ Greetings Stranger! There have been several major updates to my site since the last newsletter, so I will mainly write about that. There are not a lot of Nirvana news to bring, but a few. These newsletters are primarily about the updates to my site, though. There are now about 4000 subscribers and the number keeps rising! I can recommend to newcomers of this list that they check out the old newsletters and read the disclaimer. Old newsletters [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/newslet ] Site Updates ============ I have changed the layout a bit of the Nirvana 'Facts and Information' section and I have added lots of new documents. Things like the Nirvana FAQ, Equipment FAQ and various guides to live recordings are now linked directly to the original authors' page so you will get access to the very latest updated version of the file. Some of my previous files here were really outdated, but that is no longer the case, except with a few items that haven't been updated by the original author for a long time. As mentioned I added some new things, like more liner notes - more information on the Murder Theories and a few other things. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/ ] The other major update is the 'Interviews and Articles' section which had a major facelift, too. Also here was the main layout altered a bit and new documents were added. The files in this section are now sorted by type and year. There is a healthy selection of Nirvana interviews, Kurt Cobain interviews as well as many interesting articles about Nirvana or Nirvana related issues. I can recommend the Kurt Cobain interview from the magazine "The Advocate" and "Nevermind - It's an interview". You can also find a few articles about Hole and Courtney Love. Also, some of the existing files have been updated causing some minor errors to be wiped away. Check it out! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/ ] The two Old Age files from the section of the same name were deleted from Xoom's server but have now been moved to Tripod, so they are still available for downloading. If you have not listened to Hole's complete version of the song or the incomplete Nirvana version, you should do so right away :) - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/oldage/ ] I discovered that there was a significant error in my Nirvana Fan Club FAQ. In the HTML code I had provided for the banner, there was an error so if you added the code to your page, people would only see my banner and would not be able to actually click on it - to visit my site. I fixed this error, as well as updating a few other Questions and Answers. The biggest update was with the 'Outcesticide' question where I now have a listing of Kobra records' fakes of this bootleg, and more info on it. This was also mentioned in the previous newsletter, though. Go read the FAQ! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] I now have three people working on getting more correct tabs for that section of my page, so that should hopefully be ready soon. At the moment you can find a fairly large collection though [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/tabs.htm ] The section of my site with Chat Logs and Transcripts was updated too, fixing a few errors and removing some annoying banners and strange codes in some of the transcripts. All the files from this section are now back on my site, too. Chat Logs - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/chatold.htm ] Some people have been asking me how to install the Kurt Cobain skin for the program WinAMP - an MP3 player. So, I added instructions to this on the "Nirvana for the PC" section and there you can also find instructions as to how you add the Nirvana fonts in your Windows. In the same section you can find Windows calculators with a picture of either Kurt Cobain or Courtney Love - something you don't see every day! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/compstuff.htm ] It had been years, literally, since I updated the section of my page with Tom Grant's documents concerning the Kurt Cobain murder investigation. But it has been updated now and some dead links were removed. The documents in this section can be somewhat difficult to find elsewhere on the net now that Grant's site is no longer available. Go here to visit - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/grant01.htm ] The forthcoming Hole album, "Celebrity Skin", can now be ordered in advance from CDnow. Just click on the link from my main page, and you can place an order to receive this album before most others. It is fairly cheap, too! The album will be released by Geffen Records officially on September 8th 1998. The title track for the album is already available but I have not heard it just yet. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/index.html#buyholealbum ] I changed the image based counter on my page back to a text counter, which should hopefully work. Speaking of counts, my site received a stunning 100.000 visits between July 1st and August 15th! Currently the main page is being visited thousands of times daily which is really cool :o) For a long time I have been working with 'Cookies' for my WWWBoard. A cookie is a small file produced by your browser stored on your hard drive that remembers small details like a name and e-mail address - which you have entered to a web site. I have now, on a private WWWBoard, made cookies which means that the user doesn't have to enter name, e-mail address, URL and image URL more than once. After you have entered the information once, your computer - or your browser rather - stores it automaticly and the WWWBoard then fetches the information, and only that info, when you post a message. In other words, the lazy people like myself will not have type in name, e-mail, URL and image URL everytime I would like to post a message. Just one time only. This is still in the test phase so only the regular visitors of the site and board are trying it, on a private board. If all goes well, the cookie feature will be available on the regular public WWWBoard within a short while, along with other improvements. The Public WWWBoard - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/wwwboard ] Finally the section with 'Miscellaneous Items' was updated a bit and here you can find comments about my site from people like Chad Channing, his parents, Jack Endino and Geffen Records. There are also items like the results of my favorite song survey, winners of the Nirvana quiz and more. Most of these files are rarely updated, actually. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/miscfiles.htm ] Nirvana News ============ I have received lots of upgrades of Nirvana recordings lately. It's amazing how much a bootleg can improve when you hear it in a better quality. The most significant upgrades include 'A' quality copies of the following live Nirvana shows: [Only audio tapes are listed here] 12/31/91 San Francisco, CA 10/23/93 Chicago, IL 10/29/93 Detroit, MI 11/10/93 Springfield, MA 11/13/93 Washington, DC 12/05/93 Dallas, TX 02/08/94 Madrid, Spain As mentioned before, the 10/23/93 show is the only one that contains a Nirvana recording of the brilliant song referred to as "On The Mountain". Also, I have just added details of the Generation to my list of shows. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/text/nirvlist.txt ] I finally got to see the movie, "Kurt and Courtney", and I must say it wasn't as bad as I had expected. It did contain some interesting interviews with people like Tracy Marander, El Duce, Tom Grant, Hank Harrison (Courtney Love's father) and a few others. The bad thing is the in-professionality and some meaningless comments and features during the movie. Go watch it if you want an insight of Kurt's life based on images from his childhood home and some nice interviews. It's also hilarious watching Nick Broomfield, who made the movie, make a fool of himself while he is thrown out of hotels and other places. The movie should be available on video soon, and is still in a few cinemas. Local H are releasing their new album "Pack up the cats" on September 1st. As you may know they once made a tribute to Nirvana by covering their songs, and they did an excellent job. If you didn't know better, you would think that it was Nirvana performing. Local H can surely sound a lot like Nirvana. Francis Bean Cobain, daugher of the late Kurt Cobain - and Courtney Love turned six on the 18th of August, 1998. The previously unknown song on the 04/17/87 Olympia, WA 'KAOS' demo is apparently a Thunder and Roses cover called "White Lace and Strange". The song was first thought to be 'Laminated Effect' or a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Lemon". Ian Winter mentioned that Rolling Stone Magazine had a survey on their website, a "battle of the bands" which is between Nirvana and Pearl Jam. At the time of writing, Pearl Jam were leading with 52% to Nirvana's 48% - so we need you out there to vote for Nirvana. Visit the Rolling Stone website [ http://www.rollingstone.com ] and vote! Someone suggested that I gave a certain date for people to vote for Nirvana on MTV US' "Total Request" show, see the previous newsletter for more info. I think it would be nice if everyone voted for Nirvana on the 25th of August. Another new Nirvana book is just around the corner. It's a book about Nirvana's famous "Nevermind" album and it was written by Charles Cross from The Rocket magazine. The book should be released around September 10th. I will bring more info at that time about it. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' - the popular song - finished at #26 and 'In Bloom' finished at #60 on the list of Top Guitar Solos of all time in some magazine. Misc Stuff ========== Here is yet another Hard Rock Café story, to follow up the previous ones in Newsletter #07 and #08. This one was provided by Jason and is about the Hard Rock Café in New York City, NY: I recently visited New York on a school trip, and one of the stops was the Hard Rock Café. There was a white guitar signed by Kurt, a jacket signed by the Band [with some other writing], and some posters There was an In Utero poster I've never seen before, it included the classic In Utero angel in a can of soup! I'm too lazy to go look at the date, but I have pictures of all of it. Unfortunately, I dont have a scanner as of now. I'm interested in obtaining the T-shirts from the Hard Rock Café's around the world, so if are interested I am willing to give you bootlegs in return of a T-shirt from your local Hard Rock Café. E-mail me for more details! There will, apparently, be a demonstration at the forthcoming MTV Video Music Awards which is held at the Universal Amphitheater in Universal City, California on September 10, 1998. It is lead by Toby Amirault and its purpose is to notify the people and media of the theory that Courtney Love had something to do with the death of Kurt Cobain. The following was taken from a post to the Nirvana newsgroup, alt.music.nirvana --- By demonstrating, we wish to say -unequivocally- that: 1. We refuse to tolerate the inaction toward or dismissal of the overwhelming evidence of foul play in Cobain's death, as exemplified by the Seattle Police Department and worldwide media, particularly the music press; 2. We refuse to tolerate MTV's blatant, continued support of a murderer, Courtney Love, and her band Hole, as well as any other corporate support; 3. We refuse to allow Love the unlawful right to refuse to answer questions about her involvement in Cobain's death, such as her "gag orders" or other methods used to coerce, intimidate, silence or otherwise prevent the media from reporting the truth about Cobain's death; 4. We will not be intimated by Courtney Love or anyone who supports or works on her behalf; 5. We will continue to make Courtney Love's existence as difficult as possible, and to apply pressure to the Seattle Police Department and media, until the Cobain case is re-opened by a law enforcement agency who can assure the public of a professional, objective and complete investigation. For more information about this protest, check the Nirvana newsgroup. I, the author of this newsletter, did not write the above 5 points and I do not directly support it. Please don't e-mail me about this demonstration as I have absolutely no involvement in it. I'm just here to bring the news :) ========================= * Subscribing If you got a copy of this newsletter, but is not currently a subscriber then sign up for the list on my main page [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com ] * Unsubscribing If you would like to unsubscribe from the list and get your e-mail address removed, send an e-mail to me at the address [ list@nirvanaclub.com ] and in the subject you must put "Unsub your@emailaddress".
