______________________________________________________ The Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 05 - July 12, 1998 ------------------------------------------------------ Introduction ============ Well, well - here is the summer edition of the Nirvana Fan Club newsletter. It's been a few weeks since the last one but there simply haven't been a lot of news concerning Nirvana, however there are a few new major updates to my site and some other things to include. By the way, thanks to the people who gave me lyrics for "The Eagle Has Landed". I now have lyrics for it that should be somewhat correct ... Site Updates ============ Lots and lots of people have asked me where my Quiz was, since the description for my site on Yahoo! and a few other places stated that I had a Quiz on the page. Well I have had 2 different Quiz's on it so far and a few days ago I finally made a 3rd one public. The latest quiz features 15 questions, where some are really easy and others can be fairly difficult. I have just gotten into the art of CGI scripting, so I thought I would use that in the latest quiz. In other words, the current quiz is a lot better than the old ones because now when you are done answering the questions, you'll be informed instantly how many answers you got correct! I think this is very nice since one will always be wondering how many questions he/she answered correctly after trying a quiz like that - so with my new quiz you get just that! Furthermore, if you DO get all 15 questions right - your name will automaticly be added to the special winners page. Right now I am working on some form of "security" so people can't keep trying the questions until they get them all right, in other words .. cheating. Try out the Quiz now! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/quiz.htm ] Another thing I've been working on for a while is the "Old Age" article. Actually it's not an article but just a page that gives some information about the song and a few other things. As you may know this song was recently discovered on an old Nirvana demo tape and there is a bunch of unanswered questions concerning this song, like who wrote it .. etc. But not only do I provide this info, I have put up the complete Hole version of this great song. You can download the complete song by Hole in RealAudio format [ http://www.real.com/ ] and listen to this awesome piece for yourself, which is performed just brilliantly by Courtney Love. If you would like to download the song and read the Old Age information, go to the Old Age section [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/oldage/ ] Obviously I can't put up full songs on my domain, so the Old Age file is currently placed on Xoom's server. It was moved to Xoom from Geocities, because their server didn't work properly ... I just got a Sponsor for my site. However, I will probably soon switch to another sponsor since I have heard a lot of bad things about the current one and I have still not received payment from them. But I strongly encourage you to click on the sponsor banner on my site because it will help me getting the funds for updating my site and adding new files all the time. This is a great help in keeping the site online. Besides those things there haven't been a lot of updates to my site lately, except I updated a few mistakes in my FAQ - and the security on the WWWBoard has been improved further. At the moment there is very very little SPAM on the board and the people posting messages like "Screw you a##hole" have been reduced greatly - which is very satisfying :) - actually there was already a CGI script out there which should be able to ban certain IP addresses from the board, but the truth is that the script could only ban dial-up IP's and it didn't even work (for me anyway). But my script works perfectly and I haven't read a single book about CGI scripting .. hehe. If you run a site with a WWWBoard (and you have a /cgi-bin/) then e-mail me if you'd like more security and I'll give it to you for a small fee. Enough technical talk! Vice president, Dave, recently took over the 'Breed: Nirvana Webring' from Ed Dame. The homepage for the webring was previously located on Geocites, but they shut down the site for some reason a while ago and it was moved to nirvanaclub.com - Anyway, if you'd like to join the webring or get more info about it, check the site [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/breed/ ] Nirvana News ============ There is a new movie out with the great title, "Nirvana". But from what I can gather - the only good thing about the movie is in fact the name of it. First let me say that the movie has absolutely nothing to do with the band Nirvana (which this newsletter is about) - But I thought I would bring it up because of the catchy title ... The movie was recently reviewed in a Danish newspaper, and got the poor grade of just one star, out of six possible. Just to compare: The movie 'Armageddon' received five stars out of six possible :) Anyway, the movie Nirvana is about a computer programmer, Jimi, who works for a major Japanese company on designing computer games. He is working on a game called 'Nirvana' which is closer to an interactive movie than a simple computer game. This game is later hit by a virus, and then Jimi finds out that he is actually living in a fictive reality and wants to be deleted ............... !! As you can probably tell, it is a very odd story and the review states that it is difficult to find any meaning in this story. The movie stars Christoper Lambert (The Highlander and more), and is directed by the Italian Gabriel Salvatores. If you, for some reason, want more info about the movie you can check out the official site [ http://www.nirvana.it/ ] Speaking of movies, I will soon add an interview with Nick Broomfield to my site. Once I get the time to transcribe this interview from a magazine, I will also add a picture of Nick so you can see what he actually looks like. Oh, I forgot to mention that Nick Broomfield is the guy who made the "Kurt and Courtney" movie :) I think the interview is pretty interesting but it is best to read if you've seen the movie. I haven't even seen it yet but hopefully it will be shown around here pretty soon. It should have opened in the UK in July, but apparently it was moved to September. More movie stuff: The private investigator Tom Grant who is 'famous' for his Kurt Cobain murder theories actually had a small role in a movie once. The movie, "Oscar", starring none other than Sylvester Stallone features Mr. Grant in small role as a waiter, I believe. Unfortunately I don't have this movie myself on tape right now but next time its shown on TV I will check this out .. I'm 100% sure its true, though. As far as I remember, it's not a very good movie but that's another story :o) A new program was recently developed called TNS - The Nirvana Setlister. It's a nice little program that provides setlists and more information about all the surfaced Nirvana recordings. You can use the program to search for specific dates, and more. Download it and get more information on the TNS page [ http://members.xoom.com/Setlister/boot/Liam2.htm ] The rumours keep floating concerning the new album. The truth is that nothing has been confirmed officially yet, except that the release will be a boxset and it should be released around the year 2000. So it will most likely be a couple of years before this boxset comes out .... A source claims to have the following info from Krist: It will include as much video as audio. There will be one disc for every year the band was "active". One for 85-87, one for 88, one for 89, one for 90, 91, and so on - until '94. There will definitely be a *clean* version of "In his hands", taken from a combination of the session on new year's at Music Source with Craig M. and the 'Nevermind' sessions. Krist added some acoustic guitar on it and it will be on the 91 disc. Supposedly, the real name of it is "milk made". Well I don't know if this is true, but we will find out. I personally think it sounds logical, except I don't think it will contain a lot of video material. Probably 3-4 CDs, and 1-2 videos. Full shows are probably not included, either. Some radio station said the title of the boxed set should be "The Cold Basement Tapes" .. I like that title :) Misc Stuff ========== If you visit my site with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, don't forget to use the "Refresh" button frequently, especially on my main page. The MIE cache function is rather strange, it remembers a page you have visited but it doesn't give you the latest update of it. So for example, if you visit my main page for the first time in a week, don't forget to click on "Refresh" or else you will see a page that doesn't contain the updates made during that week. Also use the button when you use the discussian board because if you don't, it won't display the latest posted message and many of them might not exist anymore ... The easiest would be to download Netscape, which updates every time you visit a page and it still loads up the sites fast because it caches the most important thing: pictures :) - This is not an attempt to get you MIE fans to e-mail me with all the advantages that MIE does have, and why Netscape sucks. I really don't want to know! But I do know what I prefer myself. A few of the most popular Nirvana domains have been down lately. First the Cobain Memorial [ http://www.cobain.com ] seems to be down, I'm not yet sure why and if it will stay down. I heard rumours that someone else was taking it over. Also, Mike Olson's site - The Magnet Tarpit Trap - seems to be down as well. His site was recently moved from Simplenet [ terd84.simplenet.com ] to the new location [ http://www.tarpit-trap.com/ ] I'm sure this site will be up again soon. But as mentioned, I don't know why they are down ... On the other hand - two new domains are on the way. First a Kurt Cobain one [ http://www.kurtcobain.com ] which looks like another regular Nirvana site and then a Courtney Love decidated domain [ http://www.courtneylove.com ] Both these sites are owned by the same guy who also has connections with hole.com When I checked out the new kurtcobain.com a few days ago, well .. I won't say what I think about the design, it speaks for itself (unless he changed it of course). The nirvanaclub.com domain is probably the one that has been up for the longest time - among Nirvana domains of course. Some people ask me why I didn't use the name "nirvana.com" instead. Well I would love to but it has already been registered - more than six years ago actually! For some reason, the actual webpage on the domain is still not up - but I believe it will be the home for a company, and not Nirvana related. The domains nirvana.org and nirvana.net are currently used for companies. New Nirvana shows and brilliant upgrades are also surfacing at the moment, but I lost track of all of them so I will probably bring more info about that in the next newsletter. Here are some tour dates for The Methodists, courtesy of James Schultz - their manager. August 5th at the Offramp Café in Seattle, WA with Skookumchuck and TBA August 22nd with The Dwarves and Zeke September 3rd with Bell and Western State Hurricanes "Western State Hurricanes" is a new band James manages who will probably be signing with Sub Pop in the next couple of weeks. Also Mock records will be releasing the 4 hour Ramona album "Greetings From Pharmicy Park", in September. The Methodists' first CD, "Cookie" is also out now on Mock Records. And also here is a tour date courtesy of Tad Doyle. Saturday 18th of July - OK HOTEL in Seattle, WA with Tad, Foil. I'll finish off now to warm up for the World Cup final in a couple of hours :) Have a nice summer everyone !
