>From current Rolling Stone- HOLE, DON HENLEY, AND OTHES FIGHT TO REGAIN THEIR WEB NAMES By David Thigpen "Brian Wilson dosen't spend much time surfing the internet, but maybe he should. Until afew weeks ago, any web surfer happening upon brianwilson.com reached not the Beach Boy's homepage but a save-the-earth environmentalist and entrepreneaur using Wilson's name to lure unwitting surfers his way. Cybersquatting, as it's called, is becoming to srtists what MP3 is to record labels: a nagging thorn. The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen and Bonnie Raitt are but a few of the musicians who have run head on into cybersquatters. In February, Courtney Love and the estate of Kurt Cobain went to court to gain control of kurtcobain.com, courtneylove.com and hole.com, sites owned by a pair of Toronto businessmen. The trouble stems from a little known fact in cyberspace: For as little as seventy dollars, virtually any unclaimed web address can be had for the picking. Cybersquatters can then turn around and demand thousands of dollars to relinquish the claim. Love's representatives say what troubles them most is that unauthorized webpages are usually riddled with incorrect information. But thruth is not the only issue at stake. Sometimes the information posted is true- but a publicity agent's nightmare. Kurtcobain.com contains photos, song lyrics and arcana- including Cobain's suicide note and death certificate". -End of Nirvana related info. Transcribed by Sillymonkey (Shaun)
