This newsletter announces the release of a Nirvana album and a Foo Fighters album in the same month, as well as some other in- teresting news. Keep reading, for the latest updates on Nirvana. ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Some of the html files were updated, to remove the 'li' tag and replace it with a graphical 'button' instead of the default one. This was done to make it look a little better, and to avoid the pages looking screwed up in the Opera browser, which handles this particular html tag oddly. Some various other errors were corrected as well. Most of nirvanaclub.com should now be looking properly in most browsers, including Netscape, Internet Explorer & Opera. The NFC FAQ was updated again, fixing a lot of errors and add- ing new info to several of the existing answers. A slew of new info was also added, to the answer concerning the Pennyroyal Tea single. No brand new questions/answers were added in this up- date, though. FAQ: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] The page with info on the murder theories was also updated for the first time in a while, to provide Tom Grant's new URL and e- mail address. Grant: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/grant01.htm ] Unfortunately, the sound clips, in my sound gallery with the Foo Fighters are not available at the moment. I will probably find the space for them soon. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/sounds.htm ] The lucky winners of the 3rd NFC Competition have not been found just yet, as the competition is now scheduled to end on Sep- tember 20, instead of September 1, 1999 as previously intended. Try the competition: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/contest/ ] The article from Rolling Stone Magazine, announcing Kurt Co- bain as the artist of the decade, was put online. Jason of nirvana- world.com transcribed the article. It is a pretty interesting read. RS: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/rs_decade.htm ] The '1999 NFC Elections' recently started. It is basically a joke among the regular users of the Nirvana Fan Club [NFC] discus- sion boards. In the election, one can vote for a person who one believes should have an administrative position at nirvanaclub, such as moderator of a discussion board forum. Most of the eight candidates will, until the end on November 1 '99, run a campaign where the candidate will make you aware of why you should vote for him. Matthew Bonato, who is currently ahead with most votes, created a website for his campaign. It is very entertaining and it features his hilarious 'Chronicle Bliss', which is an online news- paper sort of deal that covers the latest news from the discussion boards. Another candidate, and long-time user of the boards, Ty- ler, also created a page for the purpose. Due to some recent com- plaints about the election system, a new way of voting is pre- sumably going to be implemented. At the time of writing, this is still a little shaky. However, feel free to check the following sites. Matthew: [ http://members.xoom.com/Nirvhead/campaign.htm ] Tyler's campaign page: [ http://www.cici.mb.ca/soakes/tyler.htm ] A brief article, by Addicted to Noise, concerning the 1997 Bum- bershoot festival was also put online. This festival featured a Foo Fighters show, where Krist Novoselic joined them, for the encore. Read: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/bumbshoot.htm ] I recently added some fresh pictures, from the re-creation of the 4/94 memorial for Kurt Cobain, to the site. As reported in previous newsletters, the memorial was re-created to serve a scene in the forthcoming movie 'A Leonard Cohen Afterworld'. View the pictures, and get more info here: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/afterworld/ ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ First off is some great news concerning Dave Grohl's band, The Foo Fighters. Their third album "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" is scheduled for a November 2, 1999 release. The first single off the album, "Learn To Fly", will be released on September 20, '99. Further, Dave is handling all the guitar parts on the album, while Nate Mendel is still on bass and Taylor Hawkins is still on drums. SonicNet, an online music news source, declared that the band's publicity firm announced the title of the album to be "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" rather than just "Nothing Left To Lose", which was the initial title intended for this new Foo Fighters LP. To warm up for the album, the band is scheduled for a live show in Providence, RI on September 10 at 8:00 PM. They are expected to perform new material at the show, which is part of the 'Gravity games' festival. The tickets are on sale now and if you live in the US you can get them through Ticket Master. Apparently, the con- cert may also be broadcast live over the net. Check out the official Gravity Games website for info. Dave Grohl recently spoke to MTV News about the recent depar- ture of their guitarist Franz Stahl; "'You know, it's a hard thing to talk about, something as personal as a friend leaving a band,' Grohl told MTV News. 'Whereas, in Franz's case, I've known Franz for a very long time ... and it's tough to talk about some- thing that was painful for everyone. I was just as sad ... probably sadder than everyone else, 'cause I've been playing with him for so long.'" This story was courtesy MTV News, August 8 1999. Full story: [ http://www.mtv.com/news/headlines/990818/story14.html ] Amazingly it seems that not only a Foo Fighters album will be released in November, but a Nirvana album as well! Apparently, the re-release of Nirvana's first album "Bleach" is slated to be happening on November 16, 1999 - exactly two weeks after the new Foo album's release. Apparently, Dale Crover, who does the drumming on the album, confirmed this date. However, Matt from Sub Pop told me that it would most likely not see a release this coming November; "Probably not until next year. We were trying to get it out by November, but it didn't work out. I'm not sure when exactly next year yet. Sorry. We're just trying to make it nice." So if this is true, it won't be released on November 16. I suppose for now we'll have to wait until November to see what turns out to be the truth! On a side note, Bleach was originally released on the 9th of June 1989. Thanks to Ziegler for the date. To make the confusion complete, the Canadian source 'Canoe' announced the release date of the "new" 'Bleach' as November 9! So, at the time of writing, it is unknown if it will be released either sometime in November, or next year! We'll keep you posted... MTV are currently working on a show about Nirvana's unplugged performance. Ocean McAdams of MTV added that; "We are look- ing to interview fans who were in attendance at the taping. If you or someone you know was there, please contact us at the follow- ing e-mail address." [ ocean.macadams@mtv.com ]. So if you can help, feel free to contact MTV Networks at the address above. Tom Grant, the person who started the Kurt Cobain murder inves- tigation, is once again back online. On his website, he presents his theories on the 'murder' and provides info on the investigation. To check it out, go to: [ http://www.thegrid.net/tomgrant/index.html ] Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, turned 7 on August 18, 1999. A few months ago a supplement of a popular newspaper in Israel had a 'Top 100 Pop Albums' listing. 'Nevermind' came in third place after Deep Purple and David Bowie. Thanks to Nitzan for this story. In the March 1999 issue of the Australian music magazine 'Juice', Nirvana's 'Nevermind' was voted to be the number 1 greatest al- bum of the 90's, with 'In Utero' being voted as number 16. Spe- cial thanks goes out to Rosi for this story. Not long ago Nirvana was number 1, in 'The Top 100 Bands which changed your life' in [the] UK rock magazine 'Kerrang!' The magazine added that: "Nirvana gave the new generation a new identity. They got kids off the streets and into bands, making the music scene look dangerous again." - "Looking back you feel that you may never see Nirvana's kind again." Thanks to Conor of nirvanasite.com for this story. It was rumored that the forthcoming album from Mark Lanegan would contain Nirvana covers. This, however, doesn't seem to be the case. The album, "I'll take care of you", is set to be released September 21, by Sub Pop Records. Here is the track listing for it: 1. Carry Home (The Gun Club) 2. I'll Take Care of You (Brook Benton) 3. Shiloh Town (Tim Hardin) 4. Creeping Coastline of Lights (The Leaving Trains) 5. Badi-Da (Fred Neil) 6. Consider Me (Eddie Floyd/Booker T. Jones) 7. On Jesus' Program (Overton Wright) 8. Little Sadie (Traditional) 9. Together Again (Buck Owens) 10. Shanty Man's Life (Stephen Paulus) 11. Boogie Boogie (Tim Rose) Order it: [ http://www.subpop.com/orders/lanegan_frames.html ] The 'Top 25' Nirvana sites thing is back online. Now the script handling the voting has been updated and improved. Some of the new features include: anti-cheat gateway, IP tracking, personal- ized username and password, member stats and more. Thanks to Tyler for this news. Join here: [ http://nirvana25.hypermart.net ] Another 'Top' list for Nirvana sites opened recently; this one was created by 'noga' from Israel. To join, or get more info on it, go to this URL: [ http://www.topsitelists.com/area51/tnir/topsites.html ] As if that wasn't enough, Conor of nirvanasite.com started his own 'Top 20 Nirvana sites' rundown. So, if you fancy these list- ings of Top Something Nirvana Sites, there are indeed plenty of choices! [ http://www.topsitelists.com/run/conor/topsites.html ] The semi-rare Nirvana EP "Hormoaning" is now for sale online, at several of the major stores. This includes the popular online record store Cdnow that NFC is also in cooperation with. With this EP suddenly turning up again in a store like this, and with it's fairly low price, it is speculated to be a re-release but I can't confirm that -- news courtesy of Steven. [ http://www.cdnow.com/ ] Chris Lomas submitted the following story to this newsletter; "The record company 'Simply Vinyl' have reissued 'Nevermind', 'In Utero', and 'Unplugged in New York' on vinyl in Britain. All copies are on 180g Virgin Vinyl Pressings and feature heavy qual- ity sleeves in a protective plastic sleeve. I have so far obtained the 'In Utero' album and am very impressed with the overall quality." Again, another new Nirvana-related domain has opened on the net. This one is named after Nirvana's final studio album: 'In Utero'. Check out the site here: [ http://www.inutero.com/ ] I mentioned in the last newsletter that Nirvana and Kurt Cobain was mentioned in a song by ICP. As it turns out, Kurt is also men- tioned in their song "Headless Boogie" from their "Riddle Box" album. Further, Bloodhound Gang also mentions him in their song called 'Fire Water Burn'. Thanks to Andrew for this piece of info. In a song by 'Goldfinger', there is the lyric; 'More motorcycles are stolen in L.A. than Nirvana has songs about heroin.' Thanks to Bowen Rodkey for this info. To finish off this topic, Jen added that the Mercy Playground song 'The Shadow of Seattle' is about the whole grunge scene, and the band called 'The Frogs' have a song called 'Lord Grunge' which could be associated with Kurt. With this, please don't send me info on more songs mentioning Kurt and Nirvana. It's not that relevant anymore. Thanks a lot. The Webmaster of a Nirvana site called 'The Laundry Room' re- cently created a Nirvana chat network. "The purpose for this site is that when I decided to put a chat room in the laundry room I felt no one would ever see anyone else at the same time. I also noticed that while cruising around other people's chat rooms there were usually no one there, but, if I left the browser open I noticed that people would turn up every 10-20 min, so, if all the chat pages [are] linked to the same room there would be more people in there to talk to!" So, that's the general idea behind this project. Go here to join: [ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Limo/4152/NCN/ ] The US Cable television channel Comedy Central are once again airing the two episodes of Saturday Night Live, featuring Nirvana as the musical guest. Saturday Night Live episode #808 featuring Charles Barkley and Nirvana will air on September 10, 1999 at 8:00 PM. Saturday Night Live episode #742 with Rob Morrow and Nirvana will air on September 18, 1999 at 11:00 AM and again 4:00 PM the same day. [ http://www.comedycentral.com/ ] Apparently, the people behind Saturday Night Live are releasing a live album, of musical artists who have performed on the show. As you could read above this includes Nirvana, and apparently one of Nirvana's performances will be included with the live CD. For their 1992 SNL performance, Nirvana did "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Territorial Pissings". In 1993 they did "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Rape Me". The song by Nirvana that will be included with the new CD is "Rape me". None other than DreamWorks SKG, the company founded by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, will release the double-CD. "The first disc has a classic rock bent, with performers such as Paul Simon, Sting, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Tom Petty, Billy Joel and David Bowie. The second disc features the likes of Nirvana, Hole, TLC, Dr. Dre, Oasis, R.E.M., Alanis Morissette, Green Day and the Beastie Boys." The album should be out on September 21. This story was courtesy of Yahoo News, Reuters/Variety. MTV added that: "On September 26, 'Saturday Night Live' will mark it's 25th anniversary with a two-and-a-half-hour prime time retro- spective from 9:00 to 11:30 p.m. (ET). The show's new season kicks off on October 2." In conclusion, the double-CD set is enti- tled 'Saturday Night Live: The Musical Performances, Volumes 1 And 2.' This news was courtesy of MTV Online. Thanks to Tyler, Timothy McDermid and Alban Fernandes for notifying me about it. In defense of all the negative comments that have surrounded the re-creation of the 4/94 vigil for Kurt Cobain, for the forthcoming film "A Leonard Cohen Afterworld", here are some comments from the property master of the film. "The memorial serves as a wallpaper for one scene. It's a pivotal scene for our protagonists wherein they find redemption and change their lives for the better. Not because of Kurt, nor the music. Perhaps there's no link to the memorial at all. That's up to the viewers to decide." - "I hope that you believe that we are not raping the memory of Kurt nor does the movie rely on Kurt nor his music in order to turn a buck. If anything, the members of this crew are more in line with Kurt's anti-establishmentarianism than anything." Thanks to Sean, the property master, for this comment. Please have in mind that Sean was not speaking in any official capacity and in no way represent the views of New Line or the specific producers of the film. "My views are my own and represent my point of view of the events surrounding the recreation of the Cobain Memorial Vigil," Sean added. More info here: [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/afterworld/ ] The Krist Novoselic Dedication Page, a great site with lots of ma- terial on Krist Novoselic, recently did an interview with Tim Ga- bor who is the art director of Krist's own website. Don't miss out on this great read. [ http://www.novoselic.com/interview.html ] A guy calling himself 'Boddah' is working on a petition to get the British nationwide Channel 4 to broadcast more Nirvana material; "I've been trying to get some support together so as to attempt to force Channel 4 to show some recognition of Nirvana and Kurt. You can see it at the Channel 4 website: [ www.channel4.co.uk ] at the REACH 4 section at bottom." Boddah: [ utero@mail.com ] ______________ - Misc. News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Apart from the Foo Fighters and, perhaps, Nirvana, the remaining months of this millennium will see a host of other new releases from major recording artists. This includes huge artists such as: Megadeth, The Beatles, Chris Cornell, Nine Inch Nails, Tori Amos, Iggy Pop, Beach Boys, Garth Brooks, Sting, Tony Bennet, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, B.B. King, Pet Shop Boys, Eric Clapton, Alice in Chains, ZZ Top, Meatloaf, Bryan Ferry, Gene- sis, Simply Red, Mariah Carey, Babyface, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, The Doors, Rage against the machine, Celine Dion, Beastie Boys, Korn, All saints and probably U2 and Prince, too. Wow. Apparently, all these artists (and many more) will release material during August, September, October and November '99. More info - [ http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/aug27_fall.html ] Addicted to Noise, an online news source, recently ran a cover story with the header "Introducing Verbena: Heirs To The Nir- vana Throne?" Then they feature an interview with the band, and a bunch of info on them. As I reported in a previous newsletter, they have worked closely together with Dave Grohl and the band opened for the Foo Fighters a number of times. On top of that, they are being compared to Nirvana; "The first time Nuby [the Verbena drummer] saw Dave Grohl perform, he 'totally freaked,' as Griffin puts it." - "Despite that initial intimidation, the band knew they had a fan in Grohl, and eventually they developed a friendship with him that convinced the group to approach Grohl and ask him to produce 'Into the Pink'" - "As producer, Grohl fills nearly every crevice between every brick, squeezing in sonic caulk in the form of more distortion, bigger percussion or multi- tracked vocals. Kind of like the sounds on Nirvana's Nevermind (1991). Couple that effect with Bondy's [lead singer] Cobainesque knack for allowing some notes to simply run out of steam rather than cutting them off sharply, and you've got a band and album ripe for comparisons with the most famous rock group of the past 10 years." Read the full story, and feature on Verbena, right here: [ http://www.addict.com/issues/5.08/html/hifi/Cover_Story/Verbena/ ] By SonicNet Music News of the World, the daily music news service. The domain hosting the official site for The Methodists, located at www.themethodists.com, has unfortunately been shut down due to the band breaking up. As reported in an earlier newsletter, "The Methodists, such as they were from the beginning, are no more. So, obviously there is no reason to have this website up any longer. Erik, John, and Chad [Channing, former Nirvana drum- mer] still play together, but they have changed their name twice." In addition, the account for the site was actually shut down about 5 months ago but the actual site wasn't removed until a month ago or so. This news was courtesy of 'Pandora' who is married to the former bassist Dan, and she also created the first website about the band. The Methodists, with the original lineup, got to release one great album, "Cookie" - it is out on Mock Records, # Mock 0001. The following story is not very Nirvana related, but I figured it would be interesting for some of you out there; "College Student Faces Jail For Distributing MP3s, Other Material On Web" - "A University of Oregon student who distributed thousands of songs, movies and software programs through his website is the first per- son to be convicted of a federal felony for Internet piracy. His website at the university provided access to thousands of songs in MP3 format, ranging from the Beatles' 'Free As a Bird' to work by newer artists such as Everlast, Nirvana, Sublime, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and hundreds of other groups, a prosecutor said." "Levy [Jeffrey Gerard Levy, the student] faces up to three years in jail and a $250,000 fine for the postings." - "David Green, deputy chief of the Justice Department's computer crime and intellectual property section, said there will be more arrests under the NET Act in the weeks ahead." So people, be real careful out there! By SonicNet Music News of the World, the daily music news service. In NFC Newsletter #17, I briefly mentioned the latest movie fea- turing Courtney Love; 'Man on the moon'. The movie opens in the US on November 5, 1999 and it is a biopic of the actor Andy Kaufman. Very fittingly, Jim Carrey will be starring as Kaufman, while Courtney Love is cast for the part as Kaufman's girlfriend Lynne Margulies. It also features Danny DeVito, as Kaufman's manager George Shapiro. Andy Kaufman was an incredibly tal- ented actor, who is most famous for his role as the entertaining Taxi mechanic Latka Graves in the comedic show 'Taxi'. Taxi was a great show, also featuring DeVito. Andy Kaufman died at age 35 from lung cancer - News courtesy of Premiere, Sep. 1999. Speaking of Courtney, another of her recent movies, '200 Ciga- rettes', was released on video in the US on August 17, 1999. It stars Courtney Love, Paul Rudd, Ben Affleck & Christina Ricci.
