_______________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 22 - July 15, 1999 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 22nd Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. Since it's only been a short while since newsletter #21, this one will not contain a lot of new information - but I wanted to release a newsletter already because of some significant news and info. First of all I have some exclusive information about the forthcom- ing movie "A Leonard Cohen Afterworld", brought to my atten- tion by one of the crewmembers. This newsletter will also bring a handful of site updates and some interesting news about Hole etc. ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Some freak had recently posted more than one hundred links to various websites promoting money scams and advertising firms, on the NFC link page. These were removed (the ones I could find anyway!) and the CGI script handling the link page was improved, to avoid this happening again. The good part is still, however, the fact that this section offers hundreds of links to other Nirvana re- lated websites on the net. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/links/ ] Again, the file listing shows and movies with something Nirvana related happening was updated. The file is updated almost daily at this point, thanks to numerous contributors. You will be able to find a healthy listing of movies and television shows, where some- thing Nirvana'ish is happening. Again thanks to all the contribu- tors and hurry up and view the list, before it gets too filled with irrelevant info! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/movapp.htm ] The Sound Gallery finally got back online, with half the files now hosted by nirvanaclub.com and the other half by punkjunk.com soon, courtesy of Travis Moore and B. Speer. Visit the gallery for sound files by Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, The Methodists, Hole and also Sweet 75. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/sounds.htm ] The new Bulletin Board script, Ultimate Bulletin Board, seems to be working fine and thousands of posts have already been pub- lished to the board. As of now, more than 130 users have regis- tered to use it. Thank You! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/ubb/ ] The third NFC competition is now online, offering three brand new prizes. The first prize is quite spectacular; a 120+ page book about Nirvana, containing a ton of color pictures and interesting information. Try it out! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/contest/ ] I think I've forgotten to mention the two Kurt Cobain pictures, present at the main page. They were added a while ago, replacing the old Nirvana picture and giving some more space for the news section of the main page. Both of these, quite good pictures, were shot by Tony Alves at a 1991 show in San Francisco, I believe. I got the pictures from a friend of Tony, Steven Davidson. I will probably replace the Kurt Cobain pictures by a picture of the full band shortly, since Kurt wasn't the only member of Nirvana. So enjoy these two great shots while they are online at Nirvana Club! The NFC FAQ was updated as well, adding one new question and answer. I added some info about the names Nirvana used for their band, before actually settling on "Nirvana". You'd be surprised to know how many changes the band name went through, and the final lineup also took a while to establish. Thanks to J. Dean's book for this info. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ A great gem entered the Nirvana bootleg trading circles recently, as a video of Nirvana's December 1987 show in Tacoma surfaced. The video, simply labeled 12/87 Tacoma WA, surfaced in early June 1999 although it has probably been out among traders - who were hoarding it - for about one year. The full date of the show is most likely 12/14/87, a show that has for several years been avail- able on the bootleg CD "Tacoma 1987", a favorite among traders. In fact the audio part of the video is used on this CD, thus the only 'new' part is the actual visual part of the show. The video features the complete show, roughly 50 minutes long, and is in quite de- cent quality considering the circumstances. I would rate the pic- ture quality of the video as 'B' and the audio as something be- tween 'B' and 'B+', as on the "Tacoma 1987" CD. Unfortunately, the show was shot from an unattended tripod camera, not zooming in on the band members or anything like that. During the entire show, the camera is locked on the same view and it is not fully zoomed in on the stage, which makes it a bit difficult to see Nir- vana's members properly. Besides that, it is actually a pretty good recording. Just to see a performance from Nirvana as early as this is entertaining in itself, and as you know from the audio bootleg they play a number of rarities - including an unknown song near the end of the set. You can clearly see that the venue is actually an old theatre, Community World Theatre, and generally the place seems to be very small with a crowd attendance below 50. There are probably only 20-30 people there for the show, and half of them don't even seem to be paying attention to what's going on at the stage. Indeed, a gem that all serious Nirvana fans should own and a great addition to any Nirvana collection. You could wonder why it took this video almost 12 years to surface into the trader's circles, but now that it's finally here let's just enjoy it to the full- est. Personally I only have this video in NTSC format and can therefore not dub it, and thereby trade it, but I expect to get it in PAL format soon so I can trade it. The video will probably soon get some serious circulation though, so it should be possible to get a copy from someone. Please don't ask me for a copy, or where you can get one. Give it time and you'll be able to find one sooner or later. Thanks a lot. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/bootz/ ] On the new Blink 182 CD "Enema of the State", song #7 is "Adam's Song", a song about suicide. One line in the song is: 'I took my time / I hurried up / The choice was mine / I didn't think enough' As you probably noticed, this is an almost direct quote from Nirvana's 'Come as You Are', which is: 'take your time / Hurry up / The choice is yours / Don't be late'. Thanks to Antho for this information. Whether or not this band used CAYA as an inspiration for their CD "Enema of the State" I do not know, but it is very likely. I don't know for sure if it's the case. Liam who is behind "The Nirvana Setlister", which I've men- tioned a few times before, is busily working on a new version. "The new version of The Nirvana Setlister is nearing completion and I've decided on a release date, August 16th. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, here's a short description: The Nirvana Setlister is a bootleg search program that basically is loaded with every search type you could think of, and you can search through information about Nirvana concerts." You can find more info here: [ http://members.xoom.com/nirvanatns/ ] The Nirvana Bad Traders List, mentioned in the last newsletter, recently changed to a new URL due to the page being removed from the old location. [ http://members.tripod.com/tnbtl/ ] "Q" Magazine in the UK did a poll of the Top 100 stars of the 20th century and Kurt Cobain came in 3rd after John Lennon and Paul McCartney, special thanks to Tamsin for this piece of News. British Channel 4 recently aired a "Best of 'The Word'" show, featuring Nirvana's 1991 performance at "The Word", also a Brit- ish show. They performed "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at the show. A couple of newsletters back I talked about a Nirvana tribute CD. Here is the full track listing for it: Territorial Pissings (Mother of Mary), Come as you are (Hayze), In Bloom (NME Within), Smells Like Teen Spirit (Calcutta Anazamama), Heart-Shaped Box (Mel- anie's Breast), Pennyroyal Tea (Lucky Seven), Verse Chorus Verse (T.U.L.P.), Rape Me (Flow), Drain You (Zircus), Molly's Lips (Beau Regards), Negative Creep (Lilla Prinsen), Floyd the Barber (Wasted Youth), Breed (Kikyo). Thanks to Ben Jasiewicz for the list. You should be able to get the CD at some record stores. Now to something I found very interesting. Andy Wallace who mixed Nirvana's legendary "Nevermind" album is scheduled to work on the long awaited new album by Guns N' Roses. "Es- tranged guitarist Slash is telling his official fan Web site that ses- sions relating to Guns N' Roses' long-rumored live album will be getting underway with mixer Andy Wallace sometime in July. Wallace's management company confirms that the studio veteran is booked for the sessions from July 12 through to the 29th." - "A spokesperson for Slash confirms the information, but cautions that a live CD is still not a done deal and that the sessions with Wal- lace are only exploratory." The live album has been anticipated as a Christmas release. However, also expected by the end of the year is the new GN'R studio album, although the latter has been 'expected' annually for the past five years." MTV News, July 9. Full story [ http://www.mtv.com/news/headlines/990709/story9.html ] Now to some info concerning Krist Novoselic's band, Sweet 75: "Sweet 75 are busy working on the follow up recording to their 1996 self titled debut. The music is a mixture of Rock, Latin and Groove. The band is exploring new territories while retaining dy- namic instrumentals underlying a powerful vocal. Yva Las Vegas and Krist Novoselic are collaborating with Jeff Greinke and Gina Mainwal. Jeff has been a long time composer and player in Seattle and has released eighteen records as a solo artist. Gina is a Las Vegas transplant. She has played drums in various underground bands from the 'Sin City'". The band is currently on a short tour, featuring Sky Cries Mary, Sweet 75, Sunshine Cake and Hana. The tour reached Seattle, WA on July 8th and Olympia, WA on July 10th. On July 14th the tour hit Portland, OR and thereafter fol- lows California where the tour reaches San Francisco on July 16th and Los Angeles on the 17th. Special thanks to Krist Novoselic and his website [ www.murkyslough.com ] for this information. Now to what you have been waiting for: Some exclusive informa- tion about the forthcoming movie "A Leonard Cohen Afterworld." The movie started filming in early July 1999 and it's scheduled to wrap in September 1999, for a release sometime during the spring of 2000. It will be distributed by the highly successful company New Line Cinema who are currently riding on a wave of success with "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" and others. The new Austin Powers movie was number one on the box office a few weeks ago, though for the weekend ending July 4, it was on place seven. James Cox will direct "A Leonard Cohen After- world". Scott Michael Rosenberg (Con Air, Armageddon, Beauti- ful Girls) wrote the screenplay for the film. The cast info is still far from complete. However, the two main characters of the movie will be played by Jared Leto (American Psycho, Urban Legend, The Thin Red Line, The Cool And The Crazy, etc.) and Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky). I have been fortunate enough to get some info about the movie from its property master, Sean E. Markland. Sean was the property master on successful movies such as 'Go' (Katie Holmes, Scott Wolf), 'The Proposition' (Ken- neth Branagh, William Hurt) and 'The Cemetery Club' (Ellen Burstyn, Christina Ricci) - just to name a few. Sean even had a cameo on 'Cheers' a few years back. Sean noted that; "I lived in the same neighborhood as Kurt and Courtney around the time. I lived in Seattle around the rise of Nirvana and made videos (on the crew) for many of the Seattle-sound bands. I love Seattle, and I think Kurt died too soon. That's why I was hired on this film." As for the plot of the movie, it is roughly about "two friends who escape to Las Vegas and find themselves in Seattle during the vigil rather by accident. Along the way they meet two others who join their journey. The vigil is somewhat of a turning point for all of them. They all realize that it's time to grow up, time to get seri- ous." Greg Dean Schmitz added: "Set in 1994, this film is the story of two 19-year-olds (Leto, Gyllenhaal) living in Las Vegas who use the death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain as an ex- cuse to get out of town for a while (and away from their troubles), but they soon find their lives changed out on the road." Special thanks to Sean E. Markland, Greg Dean Schmitz, upcomingmov- ies.com and especially The Internet Movie Database for this info. Now that you know more about the movie, why not get in front of the camera? That's right, you now have the chance to be an extra in "A Leonard Cohen Afterworld." On Friday July 23, 1999, the April 10th 1994 vigil for Kurt Cobain will be recreated for the film. "New Line Cinema, the same studio that brought you Austin Powers, The Mask and Boogie Nights, will be providing refresh- ments & food, Music, some surprise Celebrity Appearances, and some GREAT promotional giveaways. (The Greatest Rewards will go to those who are able to stay for the entire event. We an- ticipate this may go for as much as 4 hours or more.) Bring your friends, but try not to be late. Space may be limited." The time: Friday, July 23, 1999 at 2:00 PM. Place: Seattle Center Fountain in Seattle, Washington. You are also required to abide by a strict "dress code" if you want to be a part of this movie. Full informa- tion about what you should wear can be found on this website: [ http://www.angelfire.com/wa/afterworld/ ]. This site will also bring more information about the event soon. So, basically, if you live close to Seattle you now have the chance to be an extra in this movie and experience the re-creation of the April 10th memorial. Sean, the property master of the film, added that: "We are not in any way attempting to recreate the memorial service in any way that denigrates the memory of Kurt Cobain. If anything we're try- ing to do as much justice to that time as possible. In our script, that memorial serves as the backdrop for major life-changing moments in our main characters lives." Unfortunately I cannot be there myself, but I strongly encourage NFC newsletter subscribers, who are going, to bring a camera and shoot a few rolls of the event. Then, I will be more than happy to put these pictures at nirvanaclub.com. Please e-mail me if you are able to go and able to take pictures of the event. Serious inquires only please. News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Love Michelle Harrison [Courtney Love], Kurt Cobain's widow and the mother of his child, turned 34 on July 9, 1999. Some would argue that she turned 35, but I believe it was only 34. At "Edgefest" in Molson Park, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada - Court- ney Love pulled some people up on stage. She pulled a male from the audience (she usually only pulls girls up). At the end of her set she gave him her guitar saying: "This is the first time I have ever given a guy my guitar, don't sell it or anything." Thanks to Jeremy Abbas for this piece of News about Hole and their Edgefest show. I have mentioned Hole being scheduled for the Lilith Fair tour in some past newsletters. Well, they have now pulled out of the tour. "The band has dropped off the bill to accommodate singer Court- ney Love's film schedule. Love is set to begin shooting her part in the indie film 'Beat' at the end of the month in Mexico. Lilith fa- vorites the Indigo Girls will be stepping up to fill in for Hole in Columbus, Ohio on August 10 and Cincinnati on August 11." More Hole News: Hole was traveling from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Calgary, Alberta for its next performance as part of this year's Edgefest music festival when they saw the car flip over while at- tempting to change lanes, according to the Royal Canadian Moun- ted Police. The band stopped at the scene to help the three motor- ists, bringing them into its tour bus and offering them first aid un- til police and ambulances arrived at the scene. In an interview with the Associated Press, an officer in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police credited the band with providing shelter to the crash victims, who "were obviously in shock." As with the News above, this was also courtesy of MTV Online. July 9th, 1999. People keep asking me about info on Kurt's tattoo. So I found a website dealing with the subject, presenting pictures of his tattoo and some info - [ http://www.interlog.com/~jenj/tattoo.html ]. Special thanks to Jen Johnson for hosting and creating this page. This news is from May 18, 1999 but I thought I'd bring it anyway. "Veteran producer Bruce Fairbairn, who worked with such nota- ble bands as Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, Kiss, the Cranber- ries, and INXS among many others, was found dead at his home in Vancouver yesterday of unknown causes. He was 49. Fairbairn had been expected at an afternoon recording session with '70s art rockers Yes at his Armoury Studios and uncharacteristically failed to show up. Studio manager Sheryl Preston drove to his home and discovered his body on the floor of his bedroom. There were no apparent signs of injury or trauma. Fairbairn began his career as a horn player in the Canadian band Prism and went on to produce that band, as well as local favorites Loverboy, before going on to record such artists as Krokus and Blue Oyster Cult. He was often assisted by Bob Rock [Producer of Metallica's black album], who later established his own career as a rock producer. In 1986, Fair- bairn produced Bon Jovi's breakthough album "Slippery When Wet," which set him on a course as one of the most successful producers of the era."
