________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 19 - April 29, 1999 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ This newsletter is dedicated to the memory of the 13 people who were brutally killed in the Columbine High School shooting incident, on April 20. [ http://www.cnn.com/US/9904/27/school.shooting.02/ ] ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 19th Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. Three newsletters within a month ... that's gotta be a new record. The reason for all these newsletters is merely the fact that the media has practically been flooded with stories about Kurt Cobain and Nirvana this month. So what else could I do than bring some of those stories here? Also, everyone these days are talking about the forthcoming Nirvana boxed set, fired off by a quote on Krist Novoselic's own website, confirming the 'reality' of the album. Now that quote has almost been used more than "I have a dream ..." Also of particular interest is Rolling Stone's cover article about Mr. Cobain, and the new competition that I have online. Also, would you like to read a funny little story from Nirvana's tour in 1989? If so, don't forget to check a story written by Chad Channing, exclusively for this newsletter! The story will follow near the end. This newsletter also gives a critical view of today's music scene ... don't say I didn't warn you ! So, unless you're fed up with Nirvana Fan Club newsletters, sit back and let your body and mind reach total N I R V A N A ... ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ I just added a great article to the Interviews and Articles section. The article, written by J.D. Considine for the March 1999 issue of Guitar World, tries to explain why this decade started with alt-rock being on top of the charts and ended with it being in the bottom of the charts. Its no secret that during the early 90's, Nirvana hit their peak with the release of their legendary album "Nevermind", Pearl Jam were hitting with their great album "Ten", and Metallica's self titled, and possibly best album ever, was turning everyone into Rock N' Roll again. Not to forget Guns N' Roses' double release "Use your illusion", R.E.M.'s "Out of time" (featuring their biggest hit ever, "Losing my religion") and the stunning debut album from Rage Against The Machine. All these great, great albums were released in 1991 and 1992. Instead, today's music charts are dominated by crap. Lots of crap. A teenage girl singing "Baby one more time", Cher singing "I believe" with a screwed up computer voice and of course the millions of rap and R&B singers who all sing about the same. If you're as tired of this sad development as I am, try to read the article and perhaps find out why we blew it. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/gwdecade.htm ] 2 new questions and answers were added to the NFC FAQ, and some brief corrections were done too. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] As promised in the last newsletter I have now added a competition to the website. If you enter the current competition you could be the lucky one to win either a rare promo CD of "Heart-Shaped Box", or the double-LP set "Seattle Sound, Sounds Great" featuring a recording of Nirvana's 1991 show in Rome, Italy. The 3rd prize is a recording of the new popular bootleg "Outcesticide V". To enter the competition all you need to do is answer three very easy questions. The winners will be drawn on May 15th, 1999 and the names will then be listed on the competition page. I plan on having more competitions later on. The prizes for those will be Nirvana books, LPs, more CDs and other rare items. Special thanks goes out to Simon Wright - Esprit Records and Giovanni Rossi - Octopuss Multimedia for providing two of the prizes for this competition. As of right now, more than 500 people have entered their name to the competition. Good luck! To enter or get more info, go here. The NFC Competitions - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/contest/ ] The full list of Nirvana songs was updated too with some brief info. Also some errors were wiped away and few extra song titles were added. Thanx to the contributors. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/text/songs.txt ] In accordance to all the info that has started to surface about the next Nirvana album, I have updated the file collecting this info. To see the latest news concerning the album, simply check the "Nirvana News" section of this newsletter. Then you could check the file I have online gathering all the information, and speculations, I have collected about this boxed set. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/newalbum.htm ] I finally updated the page with links to other Nirvana sites, Foo Fighters sites, Sweet 75 sites etc. All banners were moved into a separate file to make the links file load faster and smoother. The design was also changed a little bit and some "bad" links were removed. At the time of writing, the file could offer you no less than 532 links! Out of these, 497 were added by users of nirvanaclub.com. So if you're ever bored you can just stop by the NFC link page and a list of over 500 sites you could visit will be available, with the wast majority being Nirvana related sites. You are of course also welcome to add your own link and get the list increased even further. Thanks to everyone who've made the list grow. NFC's Complete Links Section - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/links/ ] Some minor corrections were done to the lyrics for "Bleach" and "Unplugged in New York". Also some small updates were done to the file with lyrics to a slew of rare songs or covers. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/lyrics/index.html ] The 9th poll: "Should the remaining members of Nirvana get back together with a new lead singer ?" is still open and you can still cast your vote for this poll if you wish. The results of it will be brought in the next newsletter. So far, though, over 70% think that Nirvana should not get back together with a new lead singer. I must say I personally agree on that one. The Internet Nirvana Fan Club was mentioned in the May 1999 issue of "Hit Parader" magazine. They stated that it was the ultimate site to visit if you wish to get Nirvana information :) Funnily, my first Nirvana website, "The Danish Nirvana Homepage" was also mentioned in this magazine, back in the May 1997 issue! Now, exactly two years later, they mention the site again just under its current name. Back then they wrote: " ... if you're looking for a more objective view of Nirvana, go to the Danish Nirvana Homepage at http://home.intercity.dk/~ic0019/nirvana.htm Here you'll find a healthy selection of information, offering articles from Hit Parader and transcribed MTV interviews with Courtney Love. In this interesting library devoted to Nirvana information, you'll uncover Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe talking about Cobain. Of particular interest here is the story 'Surprise Surprise' written by Cobain's former bandmate Krist Novoselic ... " I always enjoy getting mentioned in magazines, especially when they are as grand as "Hit Parader". Thanks for the support! Remember that if you happen to see nirvanaclub.com getting mentioned in a magazine, on TV or somewhere else in the media, please don't hesitate to E-mail me about it. Thanks a lot! Mentioned in - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/mentioned.htm ] I just added a new WinAMP "skin" to the 'Nirvana for your computer' section. The skin is comprised of images from the "Nevermind" album. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/compstuff.htm ] Breed: The Nirvana Webring was reviewed for the "Nirvana In Nirvana" website. They previously gave a good review to the actual nirvanaclub.com website, now hosting the Breed webring. How you review a webring I do not know, but I guess they pulled it off! [ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/5032/ ] Luan de Paiva Orsini has offered to translate these newsletters into Portuguese. More info, and the Portuguese newsletters, will be on the website sometime soon. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/newslet/ ] Wouter van de Kamp has finished translating newsletter #8-12 to Dutch. Now most of them are available in this language. The Internet Nirvana Fan Club recently received another couple of awards, such as a "Site of the week" award. Thanks! Check out the NFC awards page for more info. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/awards.htm ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, is currently talking about Nirvana's next album. An album we know almost nothing about. Yet, it's almost more debated than Britney Spears and her one-hit-wonder "Baby one more time". Just one year ago, nobody knew anything about this album. Nirvana's members refused to comment about it - and Geffen/DGC were silent as the grave (and still are, concerning this project). Despite that, I started to collect information and theories about it on one hot summer day in 1998 and put it all together in a short file. As it turns out, the theories I had back then seems to have been confirmed. I wrote that it would be a boxed set, that it would be released in the year 2000, or 2001 and that it would contain the 4/90 Smart Studio Sessions. The fact that its a boxed set has been confirmed by Krist and others involved with the project, Krist said through an e-mail to one of my WWWBoard users that it would be released in 2000 or 2001, and I'm positive that it will contain the 4/90 Smart Studio Sessions, though it hasn't been confirmed yet, from Krist for example. He wishes to maintain the contents of the box secret for now. What we do know now is that it will most likely contain Scott Litt's remix of "Pennyroyal Tea". A common track that can be found on the "Pennyroyal Tea" single (a rare one) and on the K-mart version of "In Utero". The set should also contain an unreleased studio version of the cover "Here she comes now" and most likely the brilliant track "You've Got No Right". That's pretty much all we at NFC know of the contents as of right now. However, for plenty more theories, snippets from magazines, quotes etc. concerning the new release - head on over to this often-updated file --> [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/newalbum.htm ] Speaking of the 4/90 Smart Sessions, the Velvet Underground cover "Here she comes now" was indeed played at the session, despite the fact that some people claim it wasn't. I asked Chad Channing, who laid down the drum tracks for the session, about it and he said that it was the last song they recorded during that session. He remembers doing the song "quite well". Special thanks to Mr. Channing for this information. I finally received a copy of the March 1999 issue of Guitar World magazine. Kurt Cobain is on the cover and they named him "Artist of the decade" and listed "Nevermind" in the top under their list of "The best albums of the nineties". The magazine features the great article "The decade of living dangerously" by J.D. Considine, as I mentioned in the beginning of this newsletter, a lengthy article on Kurt Cobain and Nirvana - "Never More" - two interviews with him, an interview with Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, where they talk about Kurt, AND a large Cobain poster! Whew! But that's not all. Their article, "The albums of the Nineties that matter most", has Nirvana's "Nevermind" on the number one spot, Metallica's "Metallica" (a.k.a. 'The Black Album') as number two and Pearl Jam's "Ten" as number three. All three albums were oddly enough released in 1991. As if that wasn't enough, Nirvana and Kurt is also mentioned briefly in other parts of the magazine such as in the editorial. This is truly a great issue of a great magazine. One of the last magazines focusing on music that matters, that lasts; Rock N' Roll. [ http://www.guitarworld.com/ ] The May 1999 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, possibly the most popular music magazine in the world, is also interesting. Kurt Cobain is on the cover and they named him "Artist of the decade" and listed "Nevermind" in the top under their list of "Essential recordings of the 90's". It also includes a brief, and criticized, article about Kurt. If this sounds familiar to you, there is a reason for it. Rolling Stone did almost exactly the same as Guitar World did with their March issue. Naming Kurt "artist of the decade", putting him on the cover, and putting Nirvana's "Nevermind" on the list of top albums of the Nineties. Coincidence? Joe Dury who e-mailed me about the issue doesn't think so. Here is an excerpt of his e-mail concerning the "coincidence" ... or what it is: " Guitar World ran an issue two 1/2 months ago with a Kurt cover story. It proved to be one of thier best selling issues. Now Rolling Stone comes out and tries to pull the same stunt to raise sales. It's a great issue with great stuff; but do you really want to support a magazine that had Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N-sync etc. all on the past 6 months covers?!?! I will not stand for it, when I feel Rolling Stone and MTV have been responsible for the total bulls### music that dominates the world right now: if it's not shoot 'em up west coast/east coast, then it's some pop group band that sings about NOTHING, relies on image, not passion. I believe Krist said it best: 'I have original copies of the earliest R.S. magazines. I love them. 30 years ago they had something to say. Printed on newsprint it was like a fanzine, the music and politics covered were truly revolutionary. Today, the magazine is pop culture and political status quo. Why did R.S. move away from it's original mission? It did so to keep up with it's demographic. R.S. may be successful but is it real? I'd like to quote a true revolutionary, Jesus Christ, who said, 'It is better to have not known me than to have known me and turned away.'" Whether you think Rolling Stone were just trying to copy Guitar World's success, or to simply give a tribute to Kurt Cobain by naming him artist of the decade, is up to you to decide. I don't know exactly what to believe myself ... I do think its great, though, that he was named artist of the decade by two powerful magazines such as these. It seems that lots of new Nirvana shows are surfacing at the moment. As I mentioned in an earlier newsletter, the 02/09/94 Barcelona, Spain show was about to surface. It has surfaced now on audio tape, although the quality of it is not very good. Its also missing the two first tracks, "RFUS" and "Drain You" but at least it includes the rest of the show. I don't have a recording of this one yet so I can't say exactly how good it is. Another show that surfaced recently is 11/07/89 Munich, Germany. Also an audio recording but this one should be fairly good quality. It is also incomplete though. And! There's one more. Recently, some radio station broadcasted Nirvana's 08/27/91 Bremen, Germany show and granted us a high quality recording of it. I hear its quite good compared to the old audience recording. That wraps up all the newly found shows for now but I believe more are on the way ... stay tuned for info. I'm currently looking for a recording of the new 02/09/94 complete audience and 11/07/89 shows. Let me know if you have them, preferably on CD-R. Check out Rob's guide for more info on the shows. [ http://members.xoom.com/smiburho/ ] I mentioned in a past newsletter that "Bleach" would be re-released for its 10-year anniversary, possibly in August 1999. This should be certain now. With that in mind, Micah Jasper e-mailed the producer/ engineer of the album, Jack Endino, to hear more. This is what Jack wrote back to Micah: " Have not heard about 'remixing' - "There will be some sort of 'commerative' edition though, but they are not sure what it will mean other than more photos and packaging. " Thus, the album will most likely NOT be musically re-mastered, naturally, but the cover art will probably just be changed around a bit and tuned up. Here is some more info about it, from Kerrang! Magazine, provided by Oliver Morris [ lithium74@hotmail.com ] "It's still very much in the developmental stage." says Jonathan Poneman, head of the band's original label Sub Pop, " but we're going to celebrate it in some manner. We want to do something that's respectful and tasteful, not simply a shake-down of the Nirvana fans. I don't want to just slap on a new cover." An auction featuring drawings made by Kurt Cobain has been canceled. According to MTV News, " Cobain's family has come forward to stop Christie's auction house of New York City from selling some pencil and watercolor renderings done by Cobain of Ronald Reagan and Michael Jackson, according to the 'New York Post'. The pictures had been put up for consignment by one of Cobain's former high-school teachers, Robert Hunter, although they had not been scheduled for auction yet. After being threatened with a potential lawsuit by Cobain's family, Hunter was forced to return the images to his private collection. Christie's estimated the auction price of the drawings at $2,000 to $3,000 for the Reagan illustration and $3,000 to $5,000 for the one of Jackson. " - MTV News, April 13th, 1999. Why Cobain's family would disallow such an auction is beyond me, except maybe they thought that this teacher shouldn't be making thousands of dollars on Cobain. I don't know. [ http://www.mtv.com/news/headlines/990413/story3.html ] There was also an article in Time magazine about the auction. Read it here: [ http://cgi.pathfinder.com/time/magazine/articles/0,3266,22970,00.html ] Thanks to Laura Case, I just received a copy of the April 1999 issue of "Circus Magazine" - America's Rock Magazine. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter this is an "All Kurt Cobain issue", including only stuff about Kurt and Nirvana. It contains many pictures of him and Nirvana, "The Kurt Cobain story", "Nirvana songs that got away", "Kurt Cobain milestones", a brief Nirvana discography, the result of a Nirvana poll, Nirvana band bios and more. It is a pretty nice tribute to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana oriented domain, teenageriot.com, is for sale. Just as quickly as the site opened - the owner has chosen to close it again, and let it be taken over by someone else (assuming it will be sold). To bid on it or just get more info, go to this URL - [ http://www.teenageriot.com/forsale.html ] Another Nirvana oriented domain is also for sale at the moment, actually. Kurtcobain.com is currently for "Sale, Lease or Joint Development". Thank god is all I can say. The website that was previously located at this URL was criticized by many and the owner of it had some odd plans. These plans included buying up nirvanaclub.com, cobain.com and other domains and link them all together, or something like that. I remember he called me a "prick" and "loser" because I refused to sell nirvanaclub.com to him :) The website had also used a lot of material, created by nirvanaclub.com, without getting permission first. Personally I'm pleased that its gone. Hopefully the catchy URL will open again with a better website. For more info on buying the domain, simply visit [ http://www.kurtcobain.com/ ]. Note: At the time of writing the domain was for sale. It may not still be when you get/read this newsletter. According to the Radio WILN Island 106 in Panama City, " Courtney Love is donating the gun kurt shot himself with, to a mothers against violence foundation. They plan to auction it off and donate the proceeds to a Kurt scholarship fund at Aberdeen high school. Just thought you might like to know. " - Personally I don't think this is true because I believe that the gun was destroyed shortly after Kurt died, and I don't think this would be the sorta item you put up for auction, despite the good intentions! Thanks to Tesa for the info. Apparently, The Melvins [the band with Dale Crover, who've worked with Nirvana, on drums] are doing a cover of "Smells like teen spirit". They are releasing a tripple-CD set, supposedly called "Cry Baby", that will contain the cover. It should be released around November this year, on Ipecec Records. Leif Garrett should be on vocals for the SLTS cover. The two other CDs in the set, besides "Cry Baby" with SLTS, should be called "Magnet" and "The Bootlicker". According to an anonymous source, Buzz Osbourne [of The Melvins] points out that Kurt would not be offended (seeing as how he had a sense of humor) and that Kurt would be proud of what they had done. Thanks to Jena Santiago and others for the info. If you're interested in some more information on Kurt Cobain's cousin Bev Cobain just head on over to cnn.com. They have a review of Bev's book, released in 1998, and a chat transcript with her. Check it out! [ http://cnn.com/books/dialogue/9811/06/cobain/cobain.chat.html ] [ http://cnn.com/books/beginnings/9808/when.nothing.matters/index.html ] A new Nirvana auction website has opened its doors to the internet. Check it out sometime. [ http://192.41.79.165/nirvana/auction.htm ] ______________ - Misc. News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ " Two of the world's biggest record companies, Universal Music Group and BMG Entertainment, announced on April 7, 1999, that they are teaming up to promote their artists and sell records via the Internet. The joint online venture, to be called Get Music, will consist of genre-based music websites featuring artists from the two companies' rosters. News courtesy of SonicNet Music News of the World, the daily music news service - http://www.sonicnet.com/ If you're into listening to streaming music over the 'net, you should definitely stop by shoutcast.com sometime. " SHOUTCAST is a Nullsoft Winamp-based distributed streaming audio system. SHOUTcast enables anyone with the Winamp [ http://www.winamp.com/ ] high-fidelity audio player and a dial-up Internet connection to broadcast or tune in to Internet streaming audio. " Some of these Shoutcast radios broadcast Nirvana tracks from time to time. I recommend checking out "Spock's Rockin' The House", they claim to play 'lots of Nirvana'. At the time of writing they played Greenday :) [ http://yp.shoutcast.com/cgi-bin/newlistserv.cgi?genre=Rock ] Charles Peterson is having a photo exhibit. This popular photographer did several sessions with Nirvana back in the 80's and many of the most popular pictures of the band were taken by Peterson. " Featured in the exhibit are concert shots of the Dead Kennedys in 1985, another of the Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson and several others of Nirvana that were shot throughout the pioneering grunge band's too-brief history. One print shows the Melvins' Dale Crover at the end of a long, wild set, clad only in gardening gloves and underwear, standing alone onstage. Another shows the late Kurt Cobain, Nirvana's leader, staring in terror at a descending mob of autograph seekers. Seven of the exhibit's 28 images are Nirvana-related and carry slightly higher price tags. " They are on display at San Francisco's Aquarius Records through May 31. News courtesy of SonicNet Music News of the World, the daily music news service - http://www.sonicnet.com/ Courtney Love is now throwing herself over movie production. " According to a report in "Variety," Love and a partner, Janet Billig, have formed a film production company called Epitome Productions. The pair's first project will be a romantic comedy entitled "I Think We're Alone Now" about two teens in love who keep getting separated for increasingly unusual reasons. Love's partner is a former senior VP at Atlantic Records. Billig at one time served as Love's manager, and she currently handles such acts as Lisa Loeb and Bijou Phillips. "Variety" reports that Love will not appear in the film. " - MTV News, April 16th 1999. On Tuesday the 13th of April, 1999, Microsoft revealed their latest technology for downloading music on the net. They claim it offers better quality than mp3, and better capabilities to prevent unauthorized copying. " Executives from several labels joined such artists as former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, R&B singer Seal, rapper MC Lyte and ex-Porno for Pyros guitarist Peter DiStefano to see a demonstration of the software, Windows Media Technology 4.0, at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, CA. Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood demonstrated the software by playing two rock songs and a classical piece in several formats, including MS Audio 4.0 and MP3. Fleetwood said the MS Audio 4.0 files were cleaner and clearer than the others. " - News courtesy of SonicNet Music News of the World, the daily music news service - http://www.sonicnet.com/ Microsoft themselves have this to say about their new technology: "... Offering sound quality comparable to the popular MP3 audio format, the Windows Media format also includes an array of features designed to appeal to consumers, Web site developers, and music industry executives equally. Internet users will appreciate improved audio and video quality as well as the smaller files size, which translates to quicker downloads and smaller storage requirements." - "The player also supports enhanced video playback that scales from crisp compressed images at modem speeds to full-screen broadcast quality picture at broadband speeds. " - source: Microsoft. For info on MS Audio 4.0, visit [ http://www.microsoft.com/ ] You like Metallica? [ http://www.mf.dk ] Now to what you've been waiting for! The other day I asked Chad Channing if he wanted to write something for this newsletter. He agreed and the outcome is a short, yet funny, story about something that happened while he was on tour with Nirvana back in 1989. Just in case you don't know who the hell Chad Channing is, I can share with you that he was Nirvana's drummer between the spring of 1988 to mid/late 1990. His story is not very related to Nirvana but I personally liked it. " One time in San Antonio at a rest stop, we decided to stay at for the night while on tour, we heard a few ducks go down to an alligator ....... or at least we thought. It was about 30 or so miles out of town heading towards Corpus Christie (or however thats spelt). There was a small lake at the camp site and we decided to camp next to the lake. When we got there during the day, there were lots of ducks all around the lake. It wasn't till later we saw a sign stating: BEWARE OF ALLIGATORS CAMP AT OWN RISK! Anyway, we stayed. Later that evening just before turning in for the night, we heard some weird high pitch screaming sounds and lots of water splashing around. Me and Jason [Everman, Nirvana's 2nd guitarist at the time] took a flashlight and a bat with us and headed closer to the lake to see if we could tell what all was going on. It went silent for a bit than the noise started up again. Right then Jason spotted the flashlight on something out in the lake that was thrashing around. We couldn't tell what it was but watched for a while until it stopped. At that point we had second thoughts about even staying at the lake. But we stayed anyway and made it through the night fine, hehe. In Oklahoma, we stayed at a rest stop overnight and I ended up pulling 12 or 15 little green bugs out of my hair the next morning. So ..... sometimes it may be worth it to shell out the bucks for a cheap hotel than a free rest stop when on tour. You have been warned! " There you go! Touring isn't always as glamorous as you can imagine, I guess :) Again thanks to Chad for sharing it with us. Chad may return to the newsletter with more stories in the future. ___________________ - Reidar's Column - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Introduction: Reidar is the webmaster of the popular "Never Fade Away" Nirvana website.
