________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 17 - April 03, 1999 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 17th Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. This time around I will present some news about the website and some Nirvana news as usual. First, a tale about how we changed host again ... ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The company I last wanted hosting from couldn't handle my bandwidth requirements either so I was forced to terminate my account with them on April 1st, 1999. So I decided, of all things, to switch back to Prohosting who had previously hosted the site with no real problems. The site is now hosted by them and hopefully this will be the last time I have to change host. All this happened without any downtime so the site has been fully accessible during the transfer. This doesn't mean, however, that I have made no updates. I have in fact made several updates to the site. They are as follows. Again I went through each and every line of lyrics for the 7 official albums. I realized that there were still many minor errors and especially the Bleach lyrics needed to be fixed up a little. So I sat down and listened to every song on these 7 CDs and tried to fix the errors where possible. I do believe I have managed to get rid of most errors in the lyrics for these seven albums, but there may still be some problems in the Bleach lyrics. Especially with "Big Cheese". I also fixed some errors in lyrics for the rare songs, with help from Jeff Braine, and the HTML file was changed to reflect the colours and layout that the other HTML files with lyrics have. I have not gone through the rare songs myself to personally correct mistakes but I will do that eventually. Don't forget that you can, for the seven official albums, read from my lyric interpretation how many times certain lines are repeated, which is I believe exclusive for my site. More info about this in the lyrics section. Nirvana lyrics section [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/lyrics/ ] I have added more scans of book covers. For a long time I've only had two book cover scans online so I thought it was about time to add some more. Almost all pictures have been moved to a different server, so I can avoid a huge bandwidth strain on nirvanaclub.com, and avoid people making direct links to the pics. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/pics.htm ] All sound files were also moved to a different server for the same reasons, however this should not cause a problem for you as a nirvanaclub.com visitor. You will still be able to download each and every sound clip in my gallery from a fairly fast site. I also added a RealAudio file of the incomplete "Old Age" song that's been floating around for a while. The song has been touched up a little by us at nirvanaclub. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/sounds.htm ] The WWWBoard script was once again tuned up a bit, and I have increased the selection of GIF smiley's available. This means that if you for example type :o) in your message, the boring text characters will be replaced by a fun looking GIF of a smiley face. Even if you are being sarcastic in your message you can type ~s~ and a "sarcastic smiley" will show up. More info about this, and how to use the smiley's, can be found in the WWWBoard FAQ. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/wwwboard/faq.html ] If you want to just view the WWWBoard, go here - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/wwwboard/index.html ] The NFC FAQ was updated, with a few new questions and answers, surprise! These updates are not so significant but I did add some information on the infamous "24k Gold Discs" of "Nevermind and "In Utero" and more info on the "Pennyroyal Tea" single was added as well, thanks to Mr. Juho Koli. Finally some old answers were fixed for errors and further details about the PAL/NTSC thing was added. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] A little more info on the forthcoming boxed set was added, courtesy of "Record Collector" magazine and Chris Lomas. Also some information on the alleged title "The Cold Basement Tapes" was added, courtesy of Jeff Braine. And no, it will not be released in April this year! A release date is not available yet. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/newalbum.htm ] The first question of our Nirvana Quiz was changed since many didn't want to tell us how long the "Incesticide" version of "Aneurysm" is! So now you just need to tell the quiz who Nirvana's record label is. The 19 other quiz questions remain the same, for now. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/quiz.htm ] The layout of the page holding all previous NFC Newsletters was also made a little nicer than before. Now you can also find a little more information concerning the newsletter. Thanks to Wouter Vandekamp for translating the 16th newsletter to Dutch. Hopefully he is going to translate the previous newsletters to Dutch as well :) Certain editions of the newsletters can now be read in English, Turkish, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Dutch !!! Thanks to all the great people who take time to do the translations. I am not interested in translations done by using Altavista's robot. It is very inaccurate and makes many errors. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/newslet/ ] Mr. Giovanni Rossi from Octopuss Multimedia informed me that they were selling the rare Nirvana vinyl "Seattle Sounds, Sound Great" from the Insect label. Get it here - [ http://www.octopuss.com/uk/vinile.htm ] I just recently created a chatroom for nirvanaclub.com. In the past I have been against these web-based chatrooms but I managed to find a script that I thought was quite good, partly because it is configured to use the already existing chatroom #NirvanaClub on DALnet. So if you don't want to download an IRC client, simply enter the Java chatroom on the website and you can chat away with other Nirvana fans. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/chatroom.html ] At approximately 3 PM, March 30 1999, nirvanaclub.com reached one million visitors on the main page. Our current statistics claim that the site is being visited more than 3.000 times daily, and just about 100.000 times per month. I do believe the current counter registers 2 or more hits for just one visitor if he/she hits the Reload button, but its fairly limited how many times you do that visiting a website. It is funny that we should reach one million hits almost exactly two years after nirvanaclub.com was created. Again, I want to thank everyone who visits the website, especially all those who click the sponsor banner on the top of the main page. Those who click that banner are the ones who keep the site alive. Thanks everyone. I have added a small, but quite useful file, available for download on the main page. The file nfc.zip will, after being uncompressed of course, when you run it make a few slight changes in your registry database [Win 95/98/2000b only] so www.nirvanaclub.com will be your start page in either Netscape 3.x or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x [haven't tested with 5.x yet]. So all you need to do, after this, to visit the site, is just click the "Home" button. Don't forget the kick-ass British record store "Esprit" who offer a very large selection of rare Nirvana items. This includes virtually every single by Nirvana [in many different versions] and stuff such as Bleach on white vinyl [UK ltd edition of 300], the Japanese EP 'Hormoaning' and 'Incesticide' on blue swirl vinyl. Just to name a few of the things they have there. To visit their site and perhaps do a purchase just click on the "Esprit" banner located in the near bottom of my main page. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/index.html ] The 7th poll question: "Does it make you angry that Krist and Dave are not doing interviews about Nirvana and/or Kurt Cobain ?" ended with the results: Yes : 407 votes - 62% No! : 249 votes - 38% I think this shows clearly that a lot of people want Krist and Dave to make interviews where they discuss Nirvana, or Kurt Cobain. I was, however, very surprised that 249 people had no problem with them not doing such interviews. I guess it takes more than five years to get over it. The next poll question, "Which Nirvana album is your favorite" is the one you can vote for right now. Don't forget that you can still, as a website owner, earn money to keep it going by getting sponsored by ValueClick as nirvanaclub.com are, and very satisfied with being. To become a ValueClick member, simply use the link on my page that can be found under the Nirvana picture that is located at the right side of the table. Just click on the little white "ValueClick" button and follow their links to sign up for their sponsor service. Thanks. My document of most wanted Nirvana recordings has been expanded, you could say. I am now including a list of certain movies and TV shows that I need a copy of! If you can help me in either obtaining the Nirvana shows listed or the movies/shows, please contact me as soon as possible. To check out the "Most Wanted" list, go here ---> [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/mostwant.htm ] The document listing some of the movies and television shows that are in some way related to Nirvana, was updated. The document includes a listing of a few movies where Nirvana's music was played, and some TV shows where they talk about Nirvana or where a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain poster is being shown, for example. Thanks to everyone who have contributed to this document. If you have something you would like to add, E-mail me. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/movapp.htm ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ I have been getting SO many e-mails about requesting Nirvana on MTV's show Total Request. So once again, if you feel its an honor to Kurt that MTV plays Nirvana on April 5th and April 8th then feel free to vote for a Nirvana song before those two days. To vote, visit their site [ http://mtv.com/mtv/tubescan/totalrequest2/index.html ] or dial MTV US at 1-800-DIAL-MTV [for people in the US only]. I don't really care which song you request but most seem to be requesting "Where did you sleep last night", for some reason. Others are voting for SLTS. On MTV US' Total Request show for April 5, Scott Wolf from the brilliant show "Party of Five" will be in the studio to discuss his new movie. Many magazines are having tributes to Kurt in their April issues with it being, on April 5th 1999, exactly 5 years since he died. One of the more interesting are Circus Magazine who have an entire Kurt issue with pictures and information. Also the famous "Hit Parader" has a tribute to Kurt as well as the magazines "Guitar Magazine" and "New Music". I'm sure a lot of other magazines also have something about Kurt Cobain in their April issues. As mentioned earlier, the magazine "Record Collector" have in their April issue some brief information on the new album as well as an article about the five Outcesticide bootlegs. Though, I have been told that this article has many errors. Thanks to Clark Taylor I should get a copy of it soon. Also thanks to Laura Case for providing other magazines. I mentioned in the past newsletter that Kurt's childhood home is for sale. Here is some more information about it. Courtesy of Michael Svardh and Andre: " Located at 406 West Scott St in Aberdeen Washington, built in 1924 refurbished in 1999, 1-1/2 story home on a 50' x 120' lot with 3 bedrooms and 1-3/4 baths and about 1,350 finished square feet for $ 82,500.00. The home also has a "band-sized" drive through 2-car garage. The home is located about three blocks from a Washington Coast Mecca for Live Band talent called the "NorthWest Passage" not too far from the muddy banks of the Wishkah (pr. wish-kaa) River. " - if you want more info contact Michael Svardh on: advisor@windermere.com or # (360)598-5260 A few weeks ago, Hole walked out on their tour with Marilyn Manson. " Fans who caught any of the nine shows of the Marilyn Manson-Hole tour should consider themselves lucky, as Courtney Love has told MTV exclusively that Hole is quitting following yesterday's concert at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. " from the MTV news, March 15 1999. Full story. [ http://www.mtv.com/mtv/news/gallery/h/hole990315.html ] The Canadian music television channel "MuchMusic" will be airing an "Ego's and Icon's" special about Nirvana and their Unplugged show, on April 6th 1999. Special thanks to Tyler Oakes for this news. To follow-up on last newsletter's story about the "Radio One" special I can assure you that I will probably get a copy of the show sooner or later, and I know many others are taping it as well. So don't worry if you can't receive the radio station in your area. Check newsletter #16 for more info. Courtney's new movie "200 Cigarettes" popped out of the movie charts as soon as it entered, it seems. It is now out of the US Top 10 and apparently not doing very well in ticket sales. However, most of those who've seen the movie that I've talked with seemed to like it. I have not seen it myself yet. Another movie Courtney Love recently did, "Man on the moon", should open in the US pretty soon. It will open in the UK around autumn/winter time. Besides Courtney it starrs Jim Carrey and Danny DeVito and it is being directed by Sir Milos Forman who also directed the movie "The People VS. Larry Flynt", starring Courtney and Woody Harrelson. This new movie is a biopic of "Taxi" star Andy Kaufman who died of lung cancer in 1984. Courtney Love plays Lynn, Kaufman's girlfriend. Jim Carrey stars as Andy Kaufman, and Danny DeVito as his manager. Speaking of movies, don't forget to check out the new movie "Cruel Intentions" starring Vampire Slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar. It is currently showing in the US and other countries. For the weekend ending March 28, 1999 the movie was at place 10 at the Top 10, with a total gross of $33.5 million. Cruel Intentions: [ http://www.cruelintentions.com ]. Also check out [ http://www.blastmovie.com ] The Nirvana "Top 50" is moving a different server later this month. It will now be hosted by Ben at Grunger's Corner. [ http://www.grungers-corner.com/top50 ] The URL to Krist Novoselic's own website has changed from www.murkyslew.com to [ http://www.murkyslough.com ]. The latest updates include some news about the new bus he bought and some other stuff ... check it out if you want to. I don't normally advertise for Nirvana sites in this newsletter unless they offer something specific but this one seemed to be kinda cool -- "There is a brand new Nirvana web site on the net, well in the process of being on the net. It is called The Kurt Cobain Memorial which will consist of feedback about what visitors think of Kurt and his death. Please, try to keep thoughts on murder theories out of your message. When we post your page and see murder theories, poems, and unrelated nirvana issues, we will edit your form you sent us. We will have polls in which you can vote (of course)! There is a WWWBoard you can use to read and talk to other people on the net about Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl and other former members of the band. We hope that you support our new web site that is based on feedback only. We hope to start a newsletter after we get near completion of the site! As of right now there is only a WWWBoard, and a form to send us your forms, and our banner page that tells you how you can do us a favor and link to us using our banner! " - You can E-mail the people behind this new site at: cobain@grunge.zzn.com _______________ - Misc. Stuff - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ I received an amusing E-mail from Wesley Cure last month. He said that the line "With the lights out, it's less dangerous" from the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is actually supposed to be "When the lights out it sustains us". Not to forget that the line "Our little group has always been and always will until the end" should actually be "A metal group it's always been and always will until the end". Yes, it's okay to laugh now. That's what I did anyway. When I told him that his "corrections" were obviously incorrect he said to me: "How can you be a fan of his Nirvana's Music if you don't even know what he's singing about?". Yes, you may laugh again. Let's not stop there. Wesley also said "Change the lyrics NOW or find some other bands lyrics to misinterpret, 'cause I don't think Kurt would be too impressed if he could see your Web Site right now." Alright Wesley I'll do that! I'll ignore the fact that the "Lithium" single's liner notes containing the lyrics for "Nevermind" state the exact same interpretation as I use, and I'll even ignore the fact that Kurt Cobain's liner notes for "Nevermind" include the lines "... And the animals I've trapped have all become my pets * Our little group has always been and always will until the end, with the lights out it's less dangerous, here we are now, entertain us ... " I guess Kurt Cobain did a little misinterpretation himself, when he wrote down those liner notes, eh Wesley ? - "So the truth is Rasmus... YOU are wrong." Indeed I am, hehe. I know its not polite to make fun of others, but when he demands me to change something on the website and claim I'm not a Nirvana fan then I gotta prove him wrong, obviously. Wesley-free lyrics can be found right here - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/lyrics/ ] The Internet Nirvana Fan Club was mentioned in the February 1999 issue of the Australian magazine "Recovery". Right there on page 76 you get a brief insight on what the site has to offer, and "another one of the best" comment to go with it :) Unfortunately they printed an incorrect URL, nirvanafanclub.com. But I'm sure people found the correct URL. Thanks to Mike J. for sending it. Sweet 75 will appear at Seattle's Crocodile Café just today, April 3rd 1999. They will play four songs at the "Kultur Shock" CD release party. Go see 'em if you get the chance. Sweet 75 [ http://www.murkyslough.com/sweet75.html ] A friend of mine, who is also a Nirvana fan and a former user of my WWWBoard, has cancer and I will therefore encourage you to donate money to the various cancer funds if you can. He has personally donated hundreds of dollars to the Swedish cancer fund, from money he has earned selling Nirvana rarities. " Every dollar generously donated to the American Cancer Society brings us one step closer to eliminating cancer as a health threat. Your donation makes a positive impact on the people in your community -- people you know. " So, If you are interested in supporting the fight against cancer, just visit the American Cancer Society online to donate. [ http://www.cancer.org/donate/support.html ] That's about it for now. The next newsletter will be out sometime next month, possibly earlier. Don't forget to think about Kurt on April 5th 1999 - five years after he died. ___________________ - Reidar's Column - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Introduction: Reidar is the webmaster of the popular "Never Fade Away" Nirvana website. The site is respected and admired for its unique design and original material. He has agreed to write an article about a certain Nirvana related topic for each newsletter. The first article was supposed to be in this newsletter but unfortunately it wasn't ready when I wanted to send out this newsletter. I am sure it will be ready for the next one. __________________ - Practical Info - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ * Subscribing Currently not possible.
