________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 16 - March 05, 1999 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ________________ - Introduction - ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Welcome to the 16th Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. Well well, there have been quite a few Nirvana related events happening since the last newsletter so I will try to gather some info on these events in the newsletter before you. And then of course I have made a few updates with the site - that was again close to getting shut down last week - more about that later. So let's get started, shall we ? ________________ - Site Updates - ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Well sometime last week I was approached by the company who is hosting my web site at the moment and they said I was using too much bandwith, server resources if you will, and that I had to do something about it. So I moved almost all the pictures and sound files to different servers. This doesn't really mean anything to you as a user but it has been quite stressful for myself. Hopefully, nirvanaclub.com can now continue without interruptions. If anything happens I'll tell you. On a brighter note, I can now celebrate the fact that my Nirvana site has been up for just about three years. First as "The Danish Nirvana homepage" and now as "The Internet Nirvana Fan Club" - which is a site that basically "took over" my Danish Nirvana page. Its funny to imagine that many of the files you can find on nirvanaclub.com were collected, or created, in late 1995 and early 1996. The official birthday for the domain nirvanaclub.com is April 8th, 1997 where it opened on that new URL and under the new name. At the present moment the site has been visited almost 950.000 times and we are thereby getting very close to reaching one million visitors! Something that I'm very proud of, considering the fact that Nirvana sites don't create as much traffic as a porn site for instance :o) I can only thank all of you out there for making the site into what it is today, and for getting this high volume of hits. Also I must thank everyone who's been clicking the banners. The NFC FAQ was updated, with a few new questions and answers, as well as slight updates to some of the old answers. Thanks to people like SnaggY, Jonas Gustafsson and others I have been able to provide a lot of info on the rare Pennyroyal Tea single. Also added to the FAQ is a little info concerning the movie "A Leonard Cohen Afterworld". If you know more about this movie, besides what I put in the FAQ, please E-mail me. Don't forget to read the FAQ before e-mailing me. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] Another Nirvana theme was added to the "Nirvana for your computer" section. I was told that one of themes I had on there "sucked". That's quite possible since I haven't had a chance to try out the themes myself, yet. I just put up links to a few themes. So if you don't like one of the themes, there are three others to chose from! Also someone said that the "Incesticide" font is really the font from "In Utero". [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/compstuff.htm ] I recently teamed up with the British record store "Esprit" who offer a very large selection of rare Nirvana items. This includes virtually every single by Nirvana [in many different versions] and stuff such as Bleach on white vinyl [UK ltd edition of 300], the Japanese EP 'Hormoaning' and 'Incesticide' on blue swirl vinyl. Just to name a few of the things they have there. To visit their site and perhaps do a purchase just click on the "Esprit" banner located in the near-bottom of my main page. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/index.html ] I recently joined the "Nirvana Top 50" thing where you can vote for your favorite Nirvana site(s). If you'd like to vote for nirvanaclub.com, all you gotta do is click on the picture that can be found on my main page - near the bottom - besides the CDnow banner. Thanks to all of the people who have voted so far, making my site stay at the 2nd or 3rd place since I joined :) The 6th poll question which was the following: "Do you like Chad's band, The Methodists" ? ended with the following results: Yes : 259 votes - 59% No! : 183 votes - 41% Its weird that almost all my polls end with a circa 60/40 result. Again I agree with the majority here. The Methodists is a really great band. I suggest getting their CD "Cookie" if you can. The next poll question is "Does it make you angry that Krist and Dave are not doing [full] interviews about Nirvana and/or Kurt Cobain" ? I know what I'm gonna answer here and I hope most others feel the same way. I'll bring the results in the next newsletter and then we'll see about that. Go ahead & vote now if you haven't already! I just added some new, presumably better, Bass tabs for virtually every Nirvana song. Special thanks to Peter Henriksson for sending me this file. Bass Tabs - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/tabs.htm ] The Internet Nirvana Fan Club just joined Anavrin's Nirvana network. It is basically a network of Nirvana sites working together. For more info check out the Anavrin Network page. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/network/ ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ In the past newsletter I mentioned the March issue of "Guitar World" and that I was looking for a copy. I received a very large amount of E-mails from subscribers willing to buy me the magazine. Thank you ! I am very pleased that so many of you subscribers wanted to help me out with this. It should be on its way to me as we speak. Also a big thanks to Laura Case who helped me out in getting another magazine I was looking for. Finally, thanks to those who offered me Outcesticide V which I was also seeking when I sent out the newsletter number 15. I have been able to get this bootleg on CD now. While it is a pretty good bootleg I don't think its that interesting. It doesn't contain anything new for the common Nirvana trader, and no major upgrades. The CD is comprised of the show at KAOS Radio from 04/17/87, the unbroadcast songs from 01/10/92 and a few other things. You can get the full setlist and scans over at digitalnirvana.net The British radio station, "Radio One", are working on a Nirvana special that will be aired on the 5th anniversary of Kurt Cobains suicide, on April 5th 1999. The full story follows: "Dave Grohl has turned down requests to appear in a forthcoming Radio 1 UK special on Kurt Cobain. "Dave refused very nicely", says the programme's producer Emma Lyne. "He said that, even five years after Kurt's death, it was too early to talk. He did add, however, that he will talk one day." Among the celebrity Nirvana fans you will hear speaking are Ozzy Osbourne ("He said he was reading the 'Who killed Kurt Cobain?' book," reveals Lyne), The prodigy's mastermind Liam Howlett and Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield. The programme has also secured interviews with the producers of the band's three studio albums Jack Endino ('Bleach'), Butch Vig ('Nevermind') and the US noise guru Steve Albini ('In Utero'). The as- yet-untitled show will be broadcast on Radio 1 between 7pm and 8pm, on April 5th - the fifth anniversary of Cobain's suicide." Thanks to kurt- cobain.com and others for this story. I think its very interesting that both Endino, Vig and Albini will appear on the show and I'm looking forward to it. It is a pity that Krist and Dave won't appear on the show, however. In other news, the house Kurt spent his childhood in, is up for sale. "A real estate agent for Windermere Real Estate Washington Inc. has made publicly available for the first time ever Kurt's childhood home on Scott Street in Aberdeen Washington. If anyone is interested in purchasing his former home from the current owner, call him for information at: (360) 598-5260." Also thanks to kurt-cobain.com for this story. Speaking of Kurt's homes: I hear that the house on 171 Lake Washington Blvd. which was Kurt and Courtney's home prior to his suicide, is now owned by a Microsoft employee. Hmm ... Courtney's new movie "200 Cigarettes" is doing pretty good and is currently on place ten at the box office with a total gross of $3.2 - for just one week. You can read an interview with Courtney, concerning the movie, at Hollywood Online. URL: [ http://hollywood.com/pressroom/interviews/clove/clove.html ] Katey who runs the "Obituary Birthday" Nirvana web site is organizing a "Nirvana site moment of Silence" project for April 5-8th, 1999. The idea behind this is as follows. "This site [Obituary Birthday] will be shut down on April 5th- 8th, 1999. A placeholder page will be put up. It will be a dead-end, and no one will be able to access any other parts of my site while the Moment of Silence page is up. I would like to get other sites to participate." As of now several Nirvana sites, including The Internet Nirvana Fan Club, are participating in this project which I think is a fine way to pay tribute to Kurt. Moment of Silence [ http://members.tripod.com/~ObituaryBDay/mos.html ] Mehrdad Yazdani wanted me to encourage Nirvana fans to vote for Nirvana on MTV's Total Request, on April 7 so they'll play Nirvana on the day for the anniversary on April 8th 1999. His suggestion was to request the song "Where did you sleep last night" but I think it would be better to vote for the more commonly known "Smells like teen spirit", which is also the most ever played video on MTV. Well that's what I heard, anyway. Apparently Bleach is being re-released ... again. I have been informed that the album would be re-mastered (again) and re-released for its 10th anniversary in June of 1999. I don't know what the purpose of this is since its already been released several times, by at least three different record companies and the Geffen version you can purchase in the stores now is also "digitally re-mastered". At least according to the back cover. But with the songs on this album not being in the best quality, it would be sensible to make the album sound even better, if possible. More info on this Bleach re-release will follow sometime. A couple of new Nirvana books are in the works, one of them should be called "Will of Instinct: A Biography of Kurt Cobain" and will contain new interesting material. Speaking of books, I can highly recommend the new book about the Nevermind recording sessions, by Jim Berkenstadt and Charles Cross. It gives a lot of new insight into the recording sessions of this ground-breaking album, as well as information on the sessions at the Smart Studios in April of 1990. Check my FAQ for more info on it, and a link to an online store where you can purchase it. The infamous italian movie called "Nirvana", starring Chris Lambert is now available on video in many countries, including Denmark. I haven't seen it yet and I don't know if I'm going to since it received horrible reviews. There is some more info on this movie in past newsletters. I should also mention that it has absolutely nothing to do with our Nirvana, despite the title of the movie :) More info here - [ http://www.nirvana.it/ ] Someone is having a "Kurt Cobain Sound Alike" contest type of thing going. Info: [ http://www.freeyellow.com/members5/Nirvana94/kurtsoundalike.html ] A fellow who is compiling a Nirvana tribute album wanted me to post this: Hello fellow Nirvana fans, I am In the process of compiling material for a Nirvana tribute album that I am putting together, it will be comprised of nothing but Nirvana fans Covering Nirvana's or Kurt Cobains Music, or even a few songs written as tribute to kurt. Written by: sappy77@hotmail.com _______________ - Misc. Stuff - ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ I mentioned the official TAD web site in the past newsletter. I just wanted to say that the URL to it should be: http://www.nwlink.com/~tad/ but at the moment there is nothing on there. Probably because they broke up. Eduardo from SonicNet [ http://www.sonicnet.com/ ] informed that Nirvana were currently in rotation on their "FlashRadio". "FlashRadio is the only location on the web which combines killer graphics with Music as a backdrop. Come over and check it out- you'll like it." Nirvana's song "Come as you are" is currently in rotation on FlashRadio. Check it out on this URL - [ http://flashradio.com/ ] - story on A. Amirault removed on 03/2002 - I'd like to finish off with this encouraging comment I received from subscriber Matt Johnston: "This is just a little letter to let you know how much I really appreciate you news letter. It's free, it's exciting, and it's easy for me to get the most recent news that concerns what I'm interested in. I totally understand all of the hard hours you put in must sometimes seem for not. I'd just like you to know how much I enjoy and appreciate it." Thanks Matt! Let me finish off by a funny Danish quote. "Spørgsmål: Hvad kræver det for at se den nye Morten Korch serie? Svar: At man er hjernedød." - Georg Metz, 02/99. Until next time ... keep rocking and don't forget to visit nirvanaclub.com a lot :) __________________ - Practical Info - ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ * Subscribing Currently not possible.
