___________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 15 - February 12, 1999 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 15th Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. First I must apologize for the delay in getting this newsletter out. Its been more than 2 months since the last one so here is finally the next. Since the last newsletter there have been some changes and additions to my site and a few Nirvana news stories that I would like to bring. Enjoy ... ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In early January I decided, for no apparent reason, to switch to a different host that would offer a few more things such as more space for files. I switched to a web-hosting company called Communitech.Net and first off everything seemed fine. However, it turned out that this company had many hidden policies such as not allowing legal 30-sec sound files and many other things that made it virtually impossible to host my files there. Therefore I terminated my account with them and went on to stay with the current host. Soon after that I chose yet a different web-hosting company and things went into place quickly with them. However, just a few days after I signed up with them, they closed my account because my site was gaining too much "traffic". Then I changed again .... All this resulted in nirvanaclub.com being down for about two weeks but it is finally back online now, hopefully for good. And no, I didn't ban anyone. If you got the "Permission denied" error when visiting my site - it was only because the account had been discontinued and I didn't have a chance of putting up a notice that would indiciate what was going on. In other words, the site was just down while that message was up and nobody was banned. PS: Stay far away from the two virtual webhosting companies called Communitech.Net, Inc. and Addr.com - they will screw you over. I recently did a lot of changes and improvements to the WWWBoard. First I made it so whenever you type a smiley ":)", a nice smiley face image will be displayed instead of the boring text smiley. Some hidden improvements were made to the script so it should process faster and annoy you less! Currently the WWWBoard is pretty popular and not so many days ago, about 120 messages were posted in just a single day. One of the regular users of the board, Tyler is working on a page where profiles of each of the regular users will be presented so you can get a background on the people behind the messages posted. I am also pleased to say that I have helped out Ed from foofighters.net and Ben from grungers-corner.com with their WWWBoard problems. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/wwwboard/ ] Recently, a fellow calling himself "Laminated Effect" sent out a statement saying that the bootleg floating around under the title "Fecal Matter Demo / Organized Confusion Demo" is really a fake and that he knew the guy who fabricated it. Since I've personally always believed this tape to be a fake I didn't get surprised over this info and while he could be full of it, his points seem credible and quite investigated. He also provided soundclips of songs from the tape, with pre-vocals. The pre-vocals version of "Buffy's Pregnant" can be found on my site as well as this guy's statements. Also presented is a brief introduction to it all. Rob Holmes who spread the tape in the first place admitted that some of the info "Laminated Effect" gave was correct, such as the name of the person who gave Rob the demo - so it is indeed quite possible that everything Laminated Effect said in his statement is correct, hence the demo being fake. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/ ] As always I've been working hard on improving my Nirvana Fan Club FAQ and this time I've added about 10 new questions and answers. At this point I'm up to 95 questions and the list is still growing! Again I have to say that it is a very good idea to browse through this FAQ if you're planning on E-mailing me with any question related to the site and/or Nirvana. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] Most of the MP3 files in my sound gallery were converted to the RA - RealAudio - format to make the filesize smaller and thereby save some space. The quality is still pretty good so I encourage you to download the files in the sound gallery if you haven't already. The Nirvana MP3 files are still available, just hosted by a different site. I should be able to add some new sound clips soon. Remember that I can't put up full songs ....... well except when its christmas or something :o) Check out the Sound Gallery -- [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/sounds.htm ] A while ago I added two very interesting articles to the 'Articles and Interviews' section of the site. First I added an article from Goldmine magazine called "Verse Chorus Verse: The Recording History of Nirvana". As the title indicates it is a complete article about Nirvana's recording sessions and about a lot of the tracks they released. This one is over 45 pages long so it is packed with info! The other article I addded is the infamous "Strange Love" piece from Vanity Fair magazine, written by Lynn Hirschberg whom received death threats from Kurt and Courtney because of this very article. Special thanks goes out to Jen Johnson for providing these two articles. Articles & Interviews - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/interviews/ ] The Tabs section was updated with new files. Now I have both guitar and bass tabs available for "From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" and a few of the albums have two different pages with tabs, so you can pick the one you find most accurate. Remember not to E-mail me about guitar tabs before you've read the information on the tabs page. Guitar and Bass Tabulature - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/tabs.htm ] On January 1st, 1999 I released a brand new version of my mIRC script "DieNow". This is version 3.6 and it does not offer a lot of new things over the past version. However a lot of bugs and errors should have been eliminated and some parts of the scripts have been improved, to process faster and more reliable. If you are a user of IRC, or mIRC, I can only recommend getting this script. It offers hundreds of commands making IRC life easier and more fun, as well as some entertainment such as voting polls and more. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/dienow/ ] [ http://www.mirc.co.uk/ ] Breed: The Nirvana Webring was taken over by vice president Dave Labentowicz from Ed Dame a while ago but he has chosen to drop the webring and handed it over to Tyler Oakes instead. If you are a user of the webring this won't effect you directly, except you might have to change the part in the webring HTML code that says "Breed: The Nirvana Webring is owned, managed, and operated by Dave". Just replace the "Dave" part with "Tyler". Breed Webring - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/breed/ ] The 4th poll question - "Do you like Hole's new album" ? which is Celebrity Skin, ended with the following results: Yes : 1490 votes - 60% No! : 992 votes - 40% Personally I agree with the 60% since I think it is a pretty good album. The next question - "Do you like Krist's band Sweet 75" ended recently with this result: Yes : 950 votes - 60% No! : 644 votes - 40% Funnily enough this one is also 60/40 as the Hole one. The result shows that quite a lot of people don't like Krist's band ... as for my opinion, I'll just say that its not my favorite band in the world .. hehe. The next poll question: "Do you like Chad's band, The Methodists?" just started and you can vote for it now. Poll [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/ ] The Kurt and Courtney movie was released on video in the US on January 26th this year, as I mentioned already back in early December. This means that the murder theories will, sadly, get out to another large chunk of people. Please don't E-mail me about the murder theories, and don't discuss them on my WWWBoard. Almost everyone on the Nirvana newsgroup is very fond of talking about it, as with most of the HSMB subscribers. Talk about the theories there. I removed the possibility, from the main page, of subscribing to this newsletter. The reason for this is the large number of subscribers that makes it a bit difficult to send out the newsletters with the software I use right now. When I work out a solution for this, you will be able to subscribe once again. Of course all the current subscribers will not be removed and they will still be receiving the latest newsletters, without having to subscribe again or anything like that. So if you are already a member of the list, this news is not relevant to you at all. I added a new, more correct, translation of the first newsletter in German. It seemed that the old translation was done by some software and thereby had tons of errors. I believe some of my other newsletters in foreign languages were also translated with some software so I must apologize if there are errors. Right now I don't need more people to translate the newsletters to any language but I appreciate all the support. Thanks to Sebastian Höfer for correcting the first German newsletter. More german newsletters soon. After numerous requests I added three Nirvana themes for the "Nirvana stuff for your computer" section, though the files are not located on my site. I also added a link to a Nirvana screensaver. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/compstuff.htm ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In the past newsletters we've talked about cobain.com It seems now that the site is finally back online with some content. Right now you can't find a whole lot of stuff there but I am sure Brent is working on adding new and fresh material. [ http://www.cobain.com/index.html ] It seems that Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic got himself a website! Not only that, but a whole domain. The site is not very large as of now but it does contain some interesting material about his band Sweet 75, his political career and his other activities. You can also find exclusive pictures and rare info about him, Sweet 75 and even Nirvana here. His Nirvana merely contains an odd picture and some brief news now, though. Some people have argued that this site was not made by Krist but I can verify from various sources that it should indeed be Krist that is behind this site. Another factor pointing in that direction is the fact that the owner of the site never responds to E-mail :o) Check out Krist's "Murky Slough" on this URL. [ http://www.murkyslew.com ] Speaking of Krist, someone recently posted another message on the Nirvana newsgroup - pretending to be Krist Novoselic. I do not know if the person was indeed Krist but it is not very likely. However since the real Krist is a regular web-surfer, and has used the newsgroup before, it could be real I suppose. The post was this: >Your Name wrote: > > When kurt died his legend lived, > and for these bastards who write so much shit about him and > of him "fuck you" but the only one who knows the truth is you > krist! we need the knowledge > we are your grandchildren, we need you wartime stories. > kurt hated criticism so help us, tell us the truth, let kurt be > remembered > we need to know kurt > we need to now krist > we need to know dave > > but most of all we need to know what we love > TOTAL NIRVANA > Please help us Krist > Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "I can understand all of your words but I have gotten over Kurt. Not ever as a friend but as a bandmate, and as as a peaceful soul. I will let him rest forever. As far as the music goes it will never be lost. Whatever people say about Kurt it IS theyre opinion but if they talk bad about him or anything it's their problem and they never knew him. probably just jealousy. As foir me this is the last time I will post here. I've posted here before but this post caught my attention. I am working on a movie, and am in the process of making a new speech for a conference I am attending soon. So I must leave. Thank you for your concerns and cares Krist Novoselic" There ya go. Again, its likely that the message above was not made by the real Krist, its very likely actually. Make your own conclusions. New Nirvana domains keep popping up these days. One of the more interesting is the site "Digital Nirvana" maintained by a great guy calling himself Gipnor. Here you can find some information on a selection of Nirvana bootlegs and other things. This site just opened so go check it out! [ http://www.digitalnirvana.net/ ] Someone sent me a note with this following interesting news piece: " On SNL, Courtney Love and Madonna were presenting an award together on the VH1 Sprituality Awards. They were arguing with eachother and stuff, and Courtney made fun of how Madonna was into Buddhism or something like that, and Maddona says "The goal of Buddhism is to achieve Nirvana, not to break them up." I thought that was pretty funny ... though I'm not anti-Courtney. In the March issue of the guitar focused magazine "Guitar World", they named Kurt Cobain the artist of the decade, nothing less! Since I can't get this magazine around here, I'm open for people willing to donate it to me in return for a bootleg perhaps ... E-mail me if you'd like to purchase the magazine for me and trade it for something. In any case, the magazine contains a large article about Kurt and some nice pictures - or so I've been told. I was told that Circus Magazine are planning to have an "all-Kurt Cobain" issue in April 1999 but in order for this to happen they need you to vote. I suppose that they'll go with the idea if they get enough votes. Thanks to Ryan Lee and others for this information. Read more on the Circus Mag. site [ http://www.circusmagazine.com/ ] Apparently the long awaited bootleg "Outcesticide V" by Blue Moon Records has finally been released. I've seen scans of the front and back covers of this bootleg and it seems to be the real thing. The tracklisting doesn't have any outstanding surprises, but the other bootlegs in this series are quite good. If you have this bootleg, as in not one of the crappy clones by Kobra Records or whatever, but the real thing from Blue Moon Records - please contact me. Thanks. ______________ - Misc Stuff - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Apparently the bassist for The Methodists, Dan McDonald has left the band and their manager James Schultz has done just the same. Despite these two important figures leaving the band, the three remaining members (Chad Channing, Erik Spicer and John Hurd) are apparently planning on keeping the band going. As of now this is not certain though. We can only hope they'll keep going strong! According to their official website, TAD have broken up. This Seattle band thats been together since the 80's have put out several great albums and singles. During 1988 and 1989 they did tours with Nirvana. It is sad to see the way many of the good old Seattle bands is going these days. Soundgarden is another example. Courtney Love has found a new way to make people interested in going to the shows with her band Hole. She has started perform topless, once in a while, during one or more songs of the set. While this is not seen very often among female leadsingers, she's done it several times now. One example was during the Big Day Out festival this past January where she did it during the melodic song "Northern Star", I believe. She's done this "strip show" during a slew of shows in the US and she will probably be doing it again in the future, so there should be something to look forward to if you have tickets for a Hole show! More Courtney news: A movie she has a role in, "200 Cigarettes", recently opened in the US. Apparently she is trying to get her acting career started again. Finally, don't forget to catch the brilliant video for the great song "Malibu" off their latest album "Celebrity Skin". This one premiered last month. In the past newsletter I mentioned the '99 Roskilde Festival. I think. Anyway it seems that they have managed to get another huge name for this year's lineup. Atlanta rockers R.E.M. will headline the festival together with Metallica and other acts confirmed for the lineup as of now includes Marilyn Manson (yuck!), Barenaked Ladies, Chemical Brothers, Faithless and I did I mention Metallica? I think I did. Here's a snippet of the latest official Roskilde Festival 1999 newsletter: " R.E.M. AT ROSKILDE - Two top names ready for this summer's rock explosion. Roskilde Festival seems to be in the spending mood. First it was decided to leave the ticket price unchanged for Festival '99, and already now the organisers have released two top names METALLICA and R.E.M. bands, which alone could justify the price of the festival ticket. Roskilde Festival '99 (1, 2, 3, and 4 July) will present a total of 150 bands and artists, of which - a part from the two top names - some have already been released. R.E.M. PLAYS FEW BUT POWERFUL CONCERTS R.E.M. released its latest CD "Up" a few months ago. The CD received good reviews and has sold millions of copies. The CD has enthralled listeners and demonstrates how one of the most influential bands of the last decades has advanced to another level in their development. All over the World R.E.M. gathers platinum records and Grammy's in a degree barely seen before. R.E.M. is known for its high quality concerts, but also for playing relatively few live performances. The Roskilde concert will be the only one in Scandinavia this summer and it will thus gather many R.E.M. fans. R.E.M. will play Orange stage at Roskilde on Friday 2 July. " - for tickets contact ARTE at phone#: +45 3888 7014 Please notice that it could take a long while before the next news- letter is put out. It could take anything from weeks to months, so just have patience and don't be alert if this is the last newsletter ever. Until I figure out an easier way of sending them out, they will not be a top priority. Updates about this will be on the main page. Also remember that the primary goal for this newsletter is to bring news concerning updates to my website, not news about Nirvana, Hole, The Methodists, Foo Fighters, Sweet 75 or whatever. See ya next time! __________________ - Practical Info - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ * Subscribing Currently not possible.
