___________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 14 - December 04, 1998 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 14th Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. This christmas edition will most likely be the longest newsletter to date as I have a lot of news about the site and Nirvana to bring, as well as many other interesting things to share. I hope it won't get too boring, but you can just skip the parts you find irrelevant if you wish! Currently we're up to about 8000 subscribers ... ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In a few days I will put up song full length songs in a special Christmas section for the site. These songs will be some of my favorites with some rare and uncommon ones. As some examples I can tell you that "D-7" and "Son of a gun" from the Japanese EP called "Hormoaning" will be there, as well as the obscure cover "White Lace and Strange" from the 04/17/87 show at the KAOS Radio in Olympia, WA. Watch the main page during the next week or so for more information about this special Christmas '98 section, and the URL to it. I recently created a list of mislabelled bootlegs and Nirvana shows, as I know from experience how annoying it can be to get a certain bootleg with the wrong show on it. This can lead you to getting a copy of a show you already have or a show you didn't want at all. Check the guide - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/text/usurface.txt ] Once again, the script for the Nirvana Fan Club WWWBoard was improved. Now when you want to submit a new mesage you will need to confirm the submission which gives you a chance to correct errors, such as a typo, or lets you cancel the post again if you wish. This new feature also helps a little in killing the spam and meaningless messages. Go to the Board page for more info. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/wwwboard/ ] The Facts and Information section was updated and a few dead links were removed, or changed. The URL to John's great Recording Sessions guide was updated and a few new files were added. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/ ] The Internet Nirvana Fan Club recently received another few awards and thereby I decided to update the page with the awards presented. The layout was changed slighty, its still simple but effective! So if you would like to see which awards we won, stop by the award page which can be found here - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/awards.htm ] The third poll question - "Are there too many Nirvana web sites online" ended with the following surprising result: Yes : 489 votes - 30% No! : 1115 votes - 70% The result shows that 70% of the the 1604 votes didn't think there were too many Nirvana sites out there and only 30% thought there was. This result shows that the number of Nirvana websites will increase dramatically in the future, and many won't mind. Ah well, the next and current poll question is whether or not you like the latest Hole album "Celebrity Skin". As of right now, the majority does like it and I personally think its a good CD. Poll - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/ ] The Kurt and Courtney movie is still showing in a few movie theatres around the US. Kevin informed me of a place in San Diego, in the Hillcrest area, that shows it currently. Katie informed me that the movie would be released on video around the US on January 26 next year. I do not know if that is true, but it is very possible. The info comes from a radio in Houston, TX. I removed the possibility, from the main page, of subscribing to this newsletter. The reason for this is the large number of subscribers that makes it a bit difficult to send out the newsletters with the software I use right now. When I work out a solution for this, you will be able to subscribe once again. Of course all the current subscribers will not be removed and they will still be receiving the latest newsletters, without having to subscribe again or anything like that. So if you are already a member of the list, this news is not relevant to you at all. My complete list of all Nirvana songs was updated again. A few new titles were added, and some of the current names were fixed for errors. Thanks to all of you who sent contributions and corrections to this list - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/text/songs.txt ] The document with information about the forthcoming Nirvana boxed set was also updated. I just added the news that I've brought in these newsletters as well as some minor details. The latest I've heard on the album is that Krist Novoselic again confirmed the release to be true and that it would be out in a few years. That fits with the info I've given previously [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/newalbum.htm ] As always, my Nirvana Fan Club FAQ was updated again. This update is more signifant than the previous, since about 15 new questions and answers to them were added and the form of presenting the questions was changed a little bit. Don't forget to read through this FAQ prior to e-mailing me with a question related to either Nirvana or the page. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] The Internet Nirvana Fan Club was reviewed again by "Nirvana in Nirvana", and I agree pretty much with the reviewer except on a few issues. Check it out. [ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/5032/ ] My list of good and bad traders was briefly updated. A slew of past good traders was added and info on the bad ones was edited too. Stay away from Greg Seguin! References - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/refs.htm ] If you haven't noticed, in the news section of the main page I added a little button for ValueClick. If you click on that you can sign up for ValueClick yourself and start earning money for your hard work on your website. It can be any sort of website, but they prefer to sign up major sites or domain names. Personally I can only say good things about them, so click this button to find out more about ValueClick or sign up. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/index.html ] Finally, the layout on the top of the main page was changed a little bit and given a "Christmas Look". This will stay during the month of December. Enjoy! ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In the past three newsletters or so, I have talked about cobain.com - well it doesn't end here! Because the site was taken over by the previous webmaster, Brent, AGAIN and he will now be running it like he used to. At the time of writing, the site had not opened officially but I am sure it will happen soon. All the best of luck from us goes to Brent and his site [ http://www.cobain.com/ ] Another Nirvana domain opened up recently. It carries the odd name "Nirvana Mobile" and offers many good things and much of the regular stuff. [ http://www.nirvanamobile.com/ ] Speaking of domaims, a site dedicated to Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic just opened too. It offers some information on Krist, pictures, interviews, sound clips and much more. Krist Novoselic Dedication - [ http://www.novoselic.com/ ] The great article about Nirvana's recording sessions from Goldmine Magazine has been put online. It is over 40 pages long so it takes quite a while to read but is still very good - [ http://www.interlog.com/~jenj/Goldmine.html ] A new book called "Why Rush Limbaugh Is Wrong or, The Demise of Traditionalism And The Rise of Progressive" (!) has been published and it contains a chapter on Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Apparently the chapter details on how the author was inspired to write the book when Limbaugh crucified Kurt Cobain shortly after his death. Special thanks to Michael Rahman from Migthy Pen Publishing for this new information. Now that we are talking about books; recently a book documenting the "Nevermind" sessions was published. It should be quite informative and have a lot of new details that were not known before. I have not read it yet but I hear it should be quite good. You can purchase it online at Amazon's website. Follow the "Nirvana Book" link on my main page to go to the Amazon website. Then search for the book called "Nevermind : Nirvana" by Jim Berkenstadt and Charles R. Cross. Amazon's price for the book is $11.96 The rumour going that the 03/91 Nevermind demo should be surfacing is apparently not true, as I foresighted. We can only hope that the demo will surface sometime, or perhaps end up in the forthcoming boxed set release. The article I had from Backlash magazine in the last newsletter is actually the very FIRST Nirvana interview ever published. I didn't even know that until Krysta Wier informed me of it, after the release of the past newsletter. I will put the full article online soon. On a recent countdown on MTV, "MTV Top 90's", Nirvana was not number one as they've always been in those MTV countdowns but number three. I thought this was pretty surprising since they've always been number one in the past countdowns MTV have had, including their Top 500. Now I don't think this is very relevant to add, but since people keep bugging me about it, I suppose I should tell about it in this newsletter; Time Magazine have a poll online where you can vote for the most important person of the century, no less. Currently Jesus Christ himself is on the top but it would be nice if Kurt Cobain made it to the top (not really). But if you think so, you can vote for him in this poll. [ http://cgi.pathfinder.com/time/time100/poc/century.html ] Opinion Magazine has still not returned online, and the domain is still down. I am not sure what is going on but I have been told that one of the main people behind the project is missing somehow. More info as I get it. [ http://www.opinionmagazine.com/index.html ] A Nirvana CD-Rom with the name "Caught In The Act" has been created. It contains several complete bootlegs in the mp3 format as well as some other nice things, such as an AVI file and more. The first volume of this CD-rom is quite good and I recommend getting it if you a trader. [ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/5465/cita/ ] Nirvana is featured on this month's episode of "Rock and the environment" on Rocktropolis' website. "Rock and the Environment is a provocative interview show in which major rock artists discuss environmental issues and their ideas on how to help save the earth. This month's show is hosted by Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil and features Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and others." Thanks to Susan for the info. [ http://www1.rocktropolis.com/main/events/rockenviron/ ] ______________ - Misc Stuff - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Now I would like to bring a story from Krysta who met Kurt Cobain in an airport, back in 1991. Here we go : " I was on my way back home on Sept 21, 1991 from a meeting of sorts in Toronto, and was sitting waiting for my flight to arrive when I noticed a couple of people who I recognized from the show at the Opera House which I had been to the previous night. So there was Kurt Cobain and some other person who I didn't know, and still can't identify. I was sitting alone, waiting for the incredibly long check-in line to shorten before I stood up, and Kurt comes and starts looking out the window near me. So I asked him if he was who he was, and complimented on the great show. He had been looking out the window commenting to his friend how much cleaner Toronto was than most cities they travel to, so I took that opportunity to ask how he liked the city and ask where he was headed to. He sat down and his friend went somewhere else. He said he really liked Toronto, and made a couple comments in regards to Canada being the purer version of the States. We laughed, and he said he was just at the airport to meet a friend. He said he was off to the east coast for more shows, and said he didn't want to go. I said I was going home, and I didn't want to go, either. We joked about trading places, and he said I would have to cover my face a little more with my hair to pull it off, and brushed a few strands into my eyes, laughing. We chatted for about 10-15 minutes, as I saw that my line was getting shorter, and I wished him luck, said I loved his band, and left. He said good-bye, and to have a good flight. That's my story. No one recognized him, mauled him, or asked for autographs. He was so normal, it wasn't even funny. He smelled like soap. He did have phenomenally blue eyes. That's about it. Long time ago, and if I had known things would turn out the way they did, I would have paid more attention, and maybe gotten him to sign my cigarette pack. " Pretty interesting story. If you met Kurt or another band member of Nirvana and would like to share your story, feel free to e-mail it to me, and I might put it online, or put it in a NFC newsletter. Courtney Love is apparently set to star in the movie adaption of "Eustace Diamonds". Her band Hole have finished shooting the video for their current single "Malibu" and it should be available now. Now to some non-Nirvana related news! If you are a fan of Metallica like myself, you might be interested in hearing that they will be playing at the 1999 Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Metallica will play on the first day of the festival, Thursday July 1st 1998, and the tickets are already on sale. [ http://www.roskilde-festival.dk/ ] That's it for now. Merry Christmas from all of us to all of you! __________________ - Practical Info - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ * Subscribing Currently not possible.
