___________________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 13 - November 13, 1998 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ________________ - Introduction - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Welcome to the 13th Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter. Again I will tell about some of the updates on my site and bring a little Nirvana related news. Right now there are about 7800 subscribers to the newsletter! Thanks to all of you for signing up. Let's start by looking at the many site updates. ________________ - Site Updates - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Although it was not exactly my own wish, I had to put the sponsor banner on the top of my main page. I'll admit that it doesn't look too good with a sponsor on the top of the front page, but it actually helped. Hundreds of people have been clicking on it since I put it there and thereby a lot have supported the site. I'll again encourage you to click the banner, but you should only do it if you find the ad interesting. I personally think there are often interesting ads for the sites that my sponsor have signed up. As with most domains, including nirvanaclub.com, the only source of income is actually advertising. Now to the other updates ... I recently obtained more space on the server so I could move all the sound files back online, rather than having them on unstabile servers such as Tripod and Xoom. This means that all the files in my sound gallery are located on the actual site for your convinience. I will soon add some more sounds to this gallery. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/sounds.htm ] I often update my Nirvana Fan Club FAQ, and I just added a few extra questions and answers. It is always a good idea to browse through this FAQ if you have a question about Nirvana or about my site. It does help both me and you a lot if you look through it before E-mailing me. Check out the additions. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] I finally got my act together and updated the Guitar tabs section! Now I offer different interpretations of the tabs for most of the official albums. For example "Nevermind" have two different tab files, done by two different people. Which one of them is most correct is pretty much up to you to decide and pick from. If you have corrections or if you want to add some tabs, please go to the Tabs section for more information. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/tabs.htm ] The Nirvana Fan Club Quiz was updated with the extra five questions as I promised in an earlier newsletter. I think the new questions are a tad difficult so it is certainly not the easiest Nirvana Quiz around! Test your own Nirvana knowledge with my 20 questions and get the results right away. No cheating! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/quiz.htm ] I briefly updated the page with my Channing interview. I have added a picture of Chad Channing's parents whom were interviewed by me pretty recently. This is also a small token of proof that the interview is not a hoax. Amazingly, some people thought I made the whole thing up. Also if you haven't read it, I suggest you do since it is interesting in my opinion. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/channing/ ] The second poll question which you could vote for was: Did you like "From The Muddy Banks of The Wishkah" ? - and the result, not surprisingly, was as follows: Yes : 2531 votes - 94% No! : 169 votes - 06% This shows that 94% of the 2700 voters liked the latest Nirvana release while just 6% didn't like it. That gives a good promise for the forthcoming boxed set which is supposed to be released in the year 2000 or later. The latest poll question is the following: Poll #3: "Are there too many Nirvana sites online" ? I think there is, without a doubt, way too many of them on the net - but so far the majority thinks differently as "No" has taken the lead. I will bring the final poll results in the next newsletter. Vote if you haven't yet! NFC Poll #3 - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/index.html ] The Internet Nirvana Fan Club was reviewed by a German Nirvana site. Check out the site and the review which is very interesting. [ http://www.inhishands.de/index.html ] My Bootleg Trading rules were updated and made a little more humane! [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/btrading.htm ] ________________ - Nirvana News - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The little cobain.com saga which has been talked about in the previous newsletters doesn't seem to take an end. Apparently cobain.com was dropped again, and the owner Kyle Thibodeau decided to host cobain.org instead. This site is now online but still under heavy construction. So, the future of the domain cobain.com is again unknown. A new Nirvana show recently surfaced. It is a recording of the 10/21/93 Kansas City, KS concert. The actual show is just a regular In Utero performance though, and it is nothing out of the ordinary. There have been rumours going about the 03/91 Nevermind demo surfacing. This very demo is particular interesting because it should contain the only known recording of the much debated song "Old Age". Right now we only have a short clip of this track which was put online by the Seattle newspaper "The Stranger". If you have a tape with this demo, please don't hesitate to contact me. I recently obtained a setlist for the unsurfaced 08/30/91 show, but so far a recording is not available. Also, Chad Channing provided information about the shows 11/29/89 and 09/09/89. Check out Rob Holmes' concert guide for more info. Notice the new URL - [ http://members.xoom.com/smiburho/ ] The "Kurt and Courtney" documentary has started getting out to a wider audience as it was broadcasted on BBC 2 a short while ago. October 31st to be exact and it is currently being shown in Scandinavia too, by the channel Canal+. I believe it will be broadcasted on other channels in a near future and some countries are releasing it on video. Please don't ask me for release dates, cinema showings or something like that since I don't have that information. ______________ - Misc Stuff - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ I recently obtained the Auguest-September 1988 issue of the Seattle based magazine "Backlash" and it had a quite interesting article about Nirvana. Notice the spelling of Kurt and Krist's names. Here are some highlights from it: Ah, Aberdeen - a town where there's nothing to do but drink fishbeer and worship satan. The Melvins were from Aberdeen. Remember? Now the Melvins' fan club is cranking out some pretty heavy riffs on their own. They call them- selves Nirvana, a name that signifies both everything and nothing. If you don't understand this you can either take a course in world religion or you can witness Nirvana incarnate next time they perform in the big city. Nirvana's head guru Kurdt Kobain lives in Olympia now, but he first began crunching out Melvins/Soundgarden style riffs in the town that time forgot, learning everything he knows by watching the Melvins practice. Endlessly. "I've seen hundreds of Melvins practices", Kurdt recalls. "I drove their van on tour. Everybody hated them, by the way. And me and Matt [the Melvins' old bassist] even used the same calling card; it's almost like we were married." Nirvana, consisting of Kurdt on guitar and vocals, Chris Noeoselic on bass and Chad Channing on drums, is still a young band, but they're fast on their way to becoming Buddhas or at least Bodhisattvas, of the Northwest pain-rock circuit. "Our biggest fear at the beginning was that people might think we were a Melvins rip-off", Kurdt admits. Yet the association has probably also worked to the band's advantage. Nirvana recorded an ear-splitting demo tape which immediately had every noise addict in town flapping his lips over the next great white hope of grunge ... and it probably didn't hurt that Melvin Dale was sitting in on drums (this was before Chad joined). The band played its first gig as Nirvana at a Sub Pop Sunday at The Vogue. They weren't ready. "We were uptight", recalls Kurdt. "It just didn't seem like a real show. We felt like we were being judged; it was like every -one should've had score cards. Plus, I was sick. I puked that day. That's a good excuse." - "We already had songs on the radio", adds Chris. "Everyone was already talking about us. There was a lot of pressure.", Chris says. Back in 1988, neither Backlash magazine or Nirvana probably imagined the status Nirvana would have today, so it is really interesting to read these old articles on the band I think. Let me know if you have any other '88 articles on Nirvana. The 1998 MTV Europe Music Awards was broadcasted yesterday. I thought it was a cool show but Hole and the Foo Fighters were not nominated for any awards. Aerosmith took the award for best Rock Video with the brilliant song "I don't wanna miss a thing". For more information on the show, check MTV Europe's website [ http://www.mtve.com ] - or listen to the best rock video here - [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/aerosmith.mp3 ] Don't forget to stop by the new official TAD website at this URL [ http://members.xoom.com/tadworld/ ] and also visit the official Methodists website [ http://www.themethodists.com ] The Methodists are playing live in Seattle on these dates: November 27, 1998 - The Offramp Café in Seattle, WA December 03, 1998 - The Offramp Café in Seattle, WA That's it for now. Until next time ..... Rock N' Roll, Baby! __________________ - Practical Info - ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ * Subscribing If you got a copy of this newsletter, but is not currently a subscriber then sign up for the list on my main page [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com ] * Unsubscribing If you would like to unsubscribe from the list and get your E-mail address removed, send an e-mail to me at the address - list@nirvanaclub.com - and in the subject you put "Unsub your@emailaddress".
