_______________________________________________________________ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club Newsletter - # 07 - July 24, 1998 --------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction ============ It's time to yet another newsletter from the Internet Nirvana Fan Club. I will have to stop writing that the next one comes out in August since it never turns out to be true! There are a lot of news to bring, though, a few about my site and some news about Nirvana related issues. Also some info about Hole's soon-to-come new album "Celebrity Skin" ... Site Updates ============ The Internet Nirvana Fan Club was mentioned on the show 'Internet Tonight' which is on the ZDTV network. They had a 'Nirvana on the Web' special and my site was mentioned along with a few other Nirvana sites. The site received four stars, out of either four or probably five possible :) If you have a recording of this show, please let me know! Also - if you see my site mentioned in a magazine, or a TV program like this - please let me know as I am very interested in hearing about it. There is more info about ZDTV's Nirvana special here [ http://www.zdnet.com/zdtv/cda/index/0,2073,2109109-2101629,00.html ] I removed some of the info from my Old Age section about Courtney Love writing 'Come as you are' and more. A source who was close to the couple said that Courtney did NOT write this song and other evidence proves that it couldn't really be possible. Basically, Kurt didn't even know her when this song first turned up. The source who gave the information in the first place now claims that he meant the 'riff' for the song, but I don't know if Courtney had anything to do with the actual 'music' for the song - Come as you are. This means that the info for the new boxed-set from Nirvana is probably fake too although it sounds very sensible and it COULD be true. You never know. More info about this new Nirvana release will follow later in this newsletter. I recently added a new "one minute posting rule" to my discussian board which should help in preventing spam and multiple messages. But the script turned out to be rather annoying and it had a few errors so it has been removed again ! But still there is not a lot of trouble with my board at the moment which is really good. I was also working on something for the board so the "regulars" wouldn't have to type in their name, URL, e-mail etc. every time they posted a message - but this project is on hold at the moment since inplementing 'cookies' is somewhat difficult. At least in this case. Gabriel Rivera has volunteered to translate these newsletters to Spanish and has already translated three of them so far, as well as the disclaimer. The three first newsletters, in Spanish, have been put online and the next should follow shortly. These newsletters are also available in Turkish, thanks to Caner who have translated two of them so far. Again, the next should follow soon .... If you'd like to find out more, check the archive right here [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/newslet ] I have improved the CGI script for the Quiz a bit so it is a little more difficult to cheat, since a lot of people were doing just that. I plan on adding another 5 questions soon, so it will have a total of 20 questions. I will try to come up with one or more really tough questions .... I just removed the "Nirvana Screens" from my site since too many people had problems removing them from their Windows, although I had instructions on the section where they were available for download. I looked at the pictures myself and I didn't think they were very good, actually. I will try to make some Win '95 startup/shutdown screens myself soon. I did add some brief instructions as to how you install the "Nirvana fonts", to the computer section [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/compstuff.htm ] Again I updated the FAQ with a couple of questions, I can recommend reading this FAQ if you have been wondering about something related to my site or Nirvana. [ http://www.nirvanaclub.com/nfc_faq.htm ] Nirvana News ============ It is offical now - there WILL be a Nirvana release and it will be a boxed set containing CDs and probably videos. A reliable source states that the boxed set will contain the April 1990 Smart Studio Sessions which features Chad Channing on drums. I mentioned this session already back in the first newsletter and gave more details about it back then. Apparently, Jack Endino is collecting material for the release and there is speculation about a DVD disc being included as well. The boxed set should also contain a previously unreleased studio version of the cover song "Here she comes now". We can, at this time, only guess what else the boxed set will contain but it will most likely be recordings in high quality since Geffen won't release something that has poor quality. Look at "Wishkah" - all of the songs on that album are from very high quality sources. So this basically means that really early shows and early studio sessions will probably not appear in this release. It is also still not known exactly when the boxed set will be released - but the year 2000 is the most likely time. Krist and Dave have mentioned this time, too and its "only" 1½ year away ... I recently obtained a complete recording of Kurt Cobain's sound collage "Montage of Heck". This new tape contains a lot more than the cut version which is available on several bootlegs. The new tape contains more than 30 minutes extra of 'Montage of Heck' and it also has the Cher cover "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" with Krist Novoselic on vocals - which was previosly unsurfaced and many thought it didn't exist on tape at all. My trader got this tape from Kurt Cobain so the generation is low and the quality is A/A- during most of the recording. Since I surfaced this tape myself, I also have the lowest GEN and at the moment only a few people own it. I personally want to trade it only for other rare recordings, or major upgrades right at this time. Kurt Cobain made this recording back in the spring of 1988 and its basically a mix of a lot of clips from Television and several vinyls. Orginally a piece of this recording was intended as an intro for Love Buzz on Bleach, named 'Buzz Cut', but it was cut out completely at the final release. As far as I know, Sub Pop cut it out because they thought it was "crazy" - referring to Montage of Heck. It is very amusing to listen to and it contains a lot of strange sounds. There is everything from a toilet flushing to a snippet of Jackson Five's "ABC" :o) The Comedy Network in Canada is going to be replaying Nirvana's performance on Saturday Night Live on August 18. I'm not sure if its the 1992 or 1993 performance, but it will probably be the 1993 one. The complete show from 1993 with Nirvana and Charles Barkley is pretty amusing actually, especially the 'weed' sketch with Rob Schneider. MTV in the US have a show called "Total Request" and I was asked to encourage every Nirvana fan out there to e-mail this show asking them to play Nirvana videos. Write them at [ Total@mtvmail.com ] "Gregg" put together a 30 to 45 minute broadcast that plays nothing but Nirvana, Hole, and Foo Fighters. Its called "The Non-Live Nirvana Broadcast" If you would like to check this out, go to Gregg's page which is located here [ http://members.aol.com/SkateGregg/main2.html ] Misc Stuff ========== A Jennifer recently e-mailed me the following interesting story about the Hard Rock Café in Cleveland, OH : It is located inside Tower City Mall. The first thing me and my friend noticed was the "Nirvana wall" They group all the stuff by bands. They have this giant picture of Kurt the one from the In Utero tour where he's standing infront of angel wings. They had a very large family portrait when he was about 6 years old. They had the Rolling Stone when Nirvana was on the cover. They also had a photo of Kurt playing. They had a gold record. But it was high up, so I could not see what one it was. They also had a small snow dome that had two little figures in it that were holding a sign that said good luck. Under in on the plaque it read something like: "Given to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love on their wedding, Febuary 20, 1992" They also had the Rolling Stone cover with Courtney Love, Madonna, and Whitney Houston. They had a picture of Courtney with red tights, and a black and white striped dress. and they had this old looking lace dress worn by Courtney. One other thing - In the bar menu, it has this game where you look at the rock memorbila and then guess who's it is. It has a Fender right handed sunburst Mustang that Kurt signed simply with a silver marker, "Kurt" I don't know what Hard Rock that is in ... I didn't see it in Cleveland, maybe I just missed it though, case I didn't get to see everything. I went to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. To get inducted, it has to be 25 years since the release of your first album, and you have to have "changed the face of music." So if I'm correct Nirvana will be eldgible in 2014, and they surly changed the face of music. Well anyway. They have some stuff of bands not inducted yet, this is a good sign because it usually means that in the future, they will be inducted. They mention Nirvana alot. They have this giant billboard of Kurt playing acoustic guitar in a recording studio, above a place where you can listen to different music and read about the artist, when you click on Nirvana it plays ..teen spirit and it says their influences are Pixes and the Melvins. They also have these short "movies" Everyone has Nirvana in it. They were showing how rock has evolved. And they showed All Apologies on Unpluged in NY. The next short "movie" we saw had more of All Apologies, and some of ... Teen Spirit. One also shows Lead Belly singing 'Where did you sleep last night', and then it like evolves into Kurt singing it on Unplugged in NY. Me and my friend then saw the feature presentation that was 20 mins. Among artist such as the Who, to the Beetles, to Hendrix, Joplin, Madonna, and Courtney Love, it had an interview with Nirvana, mainly Kurt. Kurt was holding Frances, feeding her, he said that he now admits to taking drugs along time ago, but didn't admit to it for along time because he didn't want people to think it was okay, so he thought it best not to admit it. Then he said "don't do drugs" In the Rock Hall they also have Alternative Press from June 94 with Kurt on the cover, it's the one that says "Even in his youth" They also have the Rolling Stone with Kurt on the cover. Well there you go. I recently went to the Hard Rock Café in Copenhagen and they also had this picture of Kurt's signed Fender guitar in the menu thing. I have not yet added the interview with Nick Broomfield to my page but it shouldn't be long now. According to the July 11 issue of "Kerrang!" magazine, Dave Grohl has made the new album "Music from the motion picture Touch" all by himself, more or less. Apparently Grohl plays all the instruments for the songs on this album, only helped by Louise Post on vocals, Barrett Jones on keyboard and Eric Richards on slide guitar. But these people only appear on some of the tracks. As you might know, Dave made the first Foo Fighters album on his own, too - playing all instruments. I have not yet listened to this new album which is a soundtrack for the movie "Touch", but I'm sure its a good one ... The new Hole album is not very far away now. It should be released September 8th and is called "Celebrity Skin". There is an in-depth article about the album as well as short comments from the band on the Addicted to Noise website [ http://www.addict.com/ ] Article: [ http://rl.sonicnet.com/news/archive/singlestory.jhtml?id=400649 ] The tracklisting for the new Hole album, "Celebrity Skin" should be: "Celebrity Skin" "Awful" "Hits So Hard" "Malibu" "Reasons To Be Beautiful" "Dying" "Use Once And Destroy" "Northern Star" "Boys On The Radio" "Heaven Tonight" "Playing Your Song" "Petals" 'Use once and destroy' is a line from the Nirvana song, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter ... more info soon. The Methodists' "Official Online Fan Club" has been updated and is definitely worth checking out [ http://members.aa.net/~pandora ] Manager, James, has compiled a list of Radio Stations which could play tracks from the "Cookie" album but The Methodists need you guys out there to call these radio stations, requesting Methodists songs. For the complete list of the radio stations and more info, go to the official Methodists site [ http://www.themethodists.com ] The Methodists are currently heading out for a 8 week tour, the first leg will be a West Coast tour - Portland, San Francisco, etc. starting September 11. Second leg will be all over the US. The tour dates are courtesy of Pandora's Methodists web page. To finish off this long newsletter, here is a tour date for TAD: Friday August, 7, 1998 in front of God and everyone, One night only - Squeeze TV Grand Opening in Portland, Oregon TAD with special guests at the Mount Tabor Theatre 4811 S.E.
