NFC News Krist blogs about the 'bass throw' incident at the 1992 MTV VMAs
One of the more amusing stories from the Nirvana legacy centers around the Nirvana appearance at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards which aired at the height of Nirvana's fame. Nirvana, scheduled to go on and perform a hit off Nevermind, jokingly played the opening chords of Rape Me before diving into an incredible version of Lithium.

As you may remember from the TV broadcast, near the end of the performance, Krist throws his bass high in the air and doesn't quite catch it properly - ending up with a bit of a bruised head!

Now, for the first time ever, Krist tells the full story of what happened that night, including the infamous altercation between Kurt, Courtney and Axl Rose beforehand. "They told me that Axl Rose had walked by and Courtney started teasing him. She yelled, 'Axl, Axl—you’re the godfather!' Upon hearing this, Axl apparently got very annoyed, walked over to Kurt, and demanded that he keep his woman in line. Kurt turned to Courtney and sarcastically asked his woman to keep in line and left it at that."

From the Seattle Weekly website - read Krist's story here.

Watch a video of the performance below (including the bass toss!)

Dave Grohl's version of the story from an interview with Dennis Miller:

NFC News Update on former Nirvana guitarist, Jason Everman
An interesting update on Jason Everman who used to play guitar in Nirvana back in the day: "Jason Everman was the Stu Sutcliffe of Nirvana, briefly their second guitarist between Bleach and Nevermind (he's the one with the giant poodle mane).

In the November 10 New Yorker, there's a short piece about a group of Iraq and Afghanistan vets invited to a performance of Gregory Burke's Iraq-themed play Black Watch: one is retired Army Special Forces vet Jason Everman. Turns out he enlisted in 1994, directly influenced by Renaissance icon Benvenuto Cellini, whose autobiography promotes the ideal of the well-rounded man as artist, warrior and philosopher.

Indeed, Everman is currently studying philosophy at Columbia."

Thanks to the East Village Radio for the piece.

NFC News Nirvana on Letterman ?!
A few days ago I was fortunate enough to be in the studio audience for a taping of the Late Show with David Letterman. Shortly into the show, there was a segment with Andy Kindler talking to undecided voters at some local bar. I couldn't help but notice a Nirvana portrait hanging on the wall behind the folks Andy spoke to!

Guests on the show were Paris Hilton, Ricky Gervais, Elvis Costello and Jenny Lewis.

NFC News "The Nirvana Reader: 1988 - 1992" - new book to be published
A new Nirvana book will be published early next year:

The NIRVANA Reader: 1988 – 1992 CHRONICLES TRIO’S METEORIC RISE

Compiled and Edited by John D. Luerssen, Book Celebrates Nirvana’s (R)evolution

Few can argue that Nirvana defined rock as we now know it. From its infancy to its meteoric rise and ultimate legacy, The Nirvana Reader: 1988 – 1992 (Rock Reader Books) will celebrate one of the most beloved and sadly missed bands ever in print form when it hits shelves on January 5, 2009.

Collecting rare interviews and long out of print articles, this project was compiled and edited by award winning music journalist John D. Luerssen (Rivers' Edge: The Weezer Story) for his newly launched Rock Reader Books imprint.

Rock Reader Books, in conjunction with Lulu.com, will allow fans to revisit the essential and in many cases rarely seen articles that accompanied Kurt Cobain, Chris Novoselic and Dave Grohl on their ascent from an underground trio to the self-professed 'Flower Sniffin’, Kitty Pettin’, Baby Kissin’ Corporate Rock Whores', and, ultimately, the icons that defined modern rock & roll.

'There have been way too many Nirvana books,' laughs Luerssen. 'So what gives me the right to put The Nirvana Reader together? Well, for one thing, I’m tired of the conjecture. I’m sick of the conspiracy theories, and I really just wanted to go back to the start and read about the band as they evolved during the first four years.'

The project will retail for $16.95. ISBN: 978-0-557-02518-3.
