NFC News Cobain inspires new park in Aberdeen, WA
From the Aberdeen Daily World:
"It may seem incongruous that an 'old geezer' like Tori Kovach (a description provided by his friend Denny Jackson) would build a park commemorating the Harbor's most famous native son, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. But even though he'd rather listen to Elvis, Kovach insists he and Cobain share common ground."

NFC News New book about Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon mentions Nirvana
"Culled from over 50 exclusive interviews (including the surviving band members and those closest to the band) and featuring many never-before-seen photos, the book tells the story of the band who tragically lost their lead singer Shannon Hoon at 28."
There are quite a few references to Nirvana in the book, including Shannon Hoon's reaction to Kurt Cobain's death (Blind Melon played the David Letterman show the day Kurt's body was discovered - they dedicated the song "Change" to him, and Shannon put a question mark on his forehead, which there's a pic of in the book).
Also, the book deals with the arrival of Gary Gersh to Capitol Records (the same guy who signed Nirvana to Geffen), and also, the Blind Melon song "Soup" is discussed, in which readers will find out that part of the song is about Kurt's death.
Read more about the book at lulu.com where you can also get yourself a copy of the book (it is only available for purchase online).
If you follow the above link, you can also read a chapter and a half from the book. Additionally, there are several grunge-related musicians that were interviewed for this book, including Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez, and Duff McKagan (who's originally from Seattle).
Here's an exclusive snippet from the book with Blind Melon drummer Glen Graham talking about Shannon's reaction to Cobain's death:
"GLEN GRAHAM: [Cobain's death] freaked him out badly. I think he knew – 'If that guy can succumb to the pressures of what's going on inside his brain, then I know I can.' I don't know that he was thinking those thoughts, but I think something resonated in him, like 'Oh shit – uh oh.' I don't think they ever met – but I don't know. Kurt Cobain at the time was the focal point of youth culture – unfortunately for him."
The book is available now.

NFC News Thurston Moore on 1991: The Year That Punk Broke DVD release
"There's sort of proprietary issues because of all the Nirvana stuff in it and all that stuff is under control of whoever controls Kurt [Cobain's] estate - That Which Will Not Be Named is how we refer to it - and we don't really want to release it until we can release it with all the extra footage. There's a whole second film and it's a whole other 90 minutes; a completely different cut of all the footage. And it's even crazier! It has amazing stuff in it. So until we can do that we're not going to do it - it might be a while," he said.
A MySpace profile has recently been created to petition for a DVD release of the documentary which features a number of clips of Nirvana live. The film was originally released on VHS in the 90s and it has apparently been ready for DVD release since 2004.
If petitioning and everything else fails, Thurston Moore seems to have the answer: "I'm trying to figure out ways of bootlegging it", he adds, in true punk fashion.

NFC News Aberdeen newspaper dwells on excerpts from Goldberg's book
In his memoir, Goldberg explains that no matter what anyone says, Cobain wanted to be a rock star.
"He was a rock star on purpose, not by accident," Goldberg said. "He very well might have wanted to unwind that, though, the way Eddie Vedder and I think Pearl Jam have done a beautiful job of de-escalating their stardom and celebrity while still maintaining a big audience and a very successful career. He very well might have done something like that. But it's not like a letter arrived at his house one day that said no, you have to be a rock star."
Goldberg also says he could have seen Cobain re-invent himself to new generations like Neil Young consistently does.
He was even trying to re-invent himself while he was still alive, Goldberg said, describing Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance as something Cobain wanted to do to show off the band's creativity.
"I remember him telling me, 'People are really going to see a whole new side to my band and they're really going to get me.' " Goldberg said.
Danny Goldberg's Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Roll Business is set to be released in the USA on Thursday, September 18.

NFC News Azerrad to help Husker Du's Bob Mould write autobiography
American punk hero Bob Mould, founder of pioneering punk band Husker Du, will collaborate with Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad to write his memoir for publication in autumn 2010.
Bob Mould said, "For many years, people have asked if and when I would write my autobiography. I have always looked forward to this point in time, where I could tell my stories, to answer the many questions about the music and the lifestyle, and how they inform the creative process. I have not been alone on this ride: friends and foes, mentors and associates, peers, lovers, all traveling by my side. The ride so far has been incredible, and I hope to do my memory right in documenting the journey."
"The gorgeous rage of Bob Mould's music seemed like the best possible response to the Reagan '80s for many music-loving young Americans," says publisher Michael Pietsch. "To hear firsthand what it was like to make that music, and to build the indie rock world that eventually brought us REM, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Green Day, and much of modern rock, is something that music lovers have awaited for years."
Michael Azerrad is the author of the bestselling Our Band Could Be Your Life and Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana.
