NFC News 25 most important rock bands 1981-2006
In issue #1110 (from 06/06/06) of Kerrang! magazine, they name the 25 most important bands of the past 25 years, in light of the magazine's 25-year anniversary. Nirvana is #10 on the list: "No one could have predicted Nirvana were to become the most important rock band since The Sex Pistols. Yet in their short seven-year existence this humble trio achieved a gross-genre popularity yet to be bettered, dragging the underground kicking and snarling into the mainstream along the way."
The list is topped by Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden, respectively.

NFC News BBC's "Top of the Pops" cancelled
The legendary BBC show "Top of the Pops", featuring the latest chart-topping artists in the UK performing live, is to be cancelled after four decades on the air. Nirvana did a legendary performance on the show back in 1991, mocking the fact that they didn't play live (only Kurt's vocals were live, which he took full advantage of!) Read the story here. You can watch Nirvana's TOTP performance here, courtesy of YouTube.

NFC News Nirvana's music on TV and in movies
I recently stumbled upon an interesting article from the Chicago Tribune. It debates the use of Nirvana's music in television, movies and possibly commercials. Nirvana has long been off limits for use in this capacity but this is bound to change after Courtney Love recently sold a stake in Nirvana's publishing rights to Larry Mestel.
"Though a couple of compilations and one boxed set of the band's music have been released in the last few years, during the last decade, Nirvana's music has been largely absent from the pop-culture scene, especially in films and on television.
Licensing of the Nirvana legacy began in a small way a year ago, when 'Six Feet Under' used a Nirvana track, All Apologies, in a flashback scene in which Nate Fisher talked about Cobain's death. And 'Jarhead', a 2005 film directed by Sam Mendes, was allowed to use Something in the Way. (Mendes wanted Smells Like Teen Spirit, too, but was turned down).
[Veteran music supervisor P.J.] Bloom, who said that song-licensing prices have 'skyrocketed' in recent years as foundering record companies have attempted to wring profits from their artists in new ways, estimates that if a 'major studio came calling and wanted a song for a summer tentpole film,' the price tag for a Nirvana song could be up to $500,000, or even more."

NFC News Love Diaries
Courtney Love, who once laid bare the diary entries of her late husband, Kurt Cobain, now proposes to publish her own. The former Hole singer, in the hope that readers will have the same desire to peek into her private life as they did Cobain's, is shopping around a book about her life and loves.
"Love Diaries: My Life in Words and Pictures" is being touted as a 250-page mishmash of diary entries, love letters and notes to Cobain; Polaroids and candid photographs with Cobain and their child, Frances Bean; unpublished lyrics and more.
