NFC News Review of Dark Slivers: Seeing Nirvana in the Shards of Incesticide
Here is NFC's review of the new book about the Incesticide album - Dark Slivers: Seeing Nirvana in the Shards of Incesticide by Nick Soulsby. There's a vast number of books out there focusing on a band that did not actually exist for very long. However, this piece takes quite a different approach to the topic of Nirvana, in a two-fold way: it focuses on "Incesticide", an album that most authors don't devote much time on; and it treats the subject matter in a very different way that I personally have not seen before. With this book, you don't get a chronological type of run-down of the tired Nirvana history that most fans are already more than familiar with. Kurt hated his parents, recorded a demo at his aunt Mari's house, started a band, became famous, did drugs, etc. etc. Instead, you get the author's unique perspective on song lyrics, meanings, and what the band may have been thinking when they were making the decisions that ultimately resulted in Incesticide. Indeed, it's great to get a 'fresh' perspective on an album that hasn't been analysed much previously. And this from an author who clearly has studied the subject thoroughly and is very knowledgeable about it, and about the Nirvana legend in general. There's also some titbits of new information here and there, mostly in the form of quotes from interviews conducted by the author. For example with Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop who sheds light on whether Sub Pop was planning a release before Nirvana signed with Geffen. I like the way the author goes about his subject, with much passion and interest, and he raises many interesting points and conclusions. You may agree with these or not, after all much of the book is the author's own opinions, but everything is certainly well-argued, and makes sense. The book is perhaps not ideal for the newbie Nirvana-fan, but if you have some background knowledge, and a keen interest in the Nirvana legacy, you will get some fresh perspectives from this author, a lot of interesting information about Incesticide, and probably pick up a few things you may never have realised before - about the songs and what went into them, or what may have happened behind the scenes. The very limited-edition paperback edition of the book is currently not in stock from Amazon, but you can get a copy by contacting the author at NirvanaDarkSlivers@gmail.com. You can also get the e-book from Amazon Check out the author's official blog for more info at nirvana-legacy.com.

NFC News Dave, Krist and Pat perform with Paul McCartney
At yesterday's 12-12-12 Huricane Sandy relief concert in New York, there was a mini Nirvana "reunion" with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear performing together again. They were joined by none other than Beatles-legend Paul McCartney. With Grohl back behind the drumkit, the musicians performed a new song called Cut Me Some Slack which is included in the soundtrack for the upcoming film Sound City, produced by Grohl. More on the story from Loudwire: Earlier in the day, there were rumors that McCartney would be singing the late Kurt Cobain's parts for some Nirvana covers, but the collective instead performed an original track that they had written during an impromptu jam session. Bassist Krist Novoselic tweeted earlier that the song 'was kind of Helter Skelter meets Scentless Apprentice. It rocks with a heavy groove. St. Paul is powerful.' Novoselic also tweeted out the photo of himself with Grohl and Smear. The concert also featured artists such as The Who, The Rolling Stones, Eddie Vedder, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and others.

NFC News New book - Dark Slivers: Seeing Nirvana in the Shards of Incesticide |
A new Nirvana book is just about to be published - Dark Slivers: Seeing Nirvana in the Shards of Incesticide. Unlike most other Nirvana books, this one is focused on the Incesticide album. From the author:While multiple treatments of Nirvana have retold their career as a story focused around chronology and dates 'who did what and where' I believe there's more to say. In Dark Slivers: Seeing Nirvana in the Shards of Incesticide I've treated Nirvana thematically, each chapter focusing on a single topic, positing a specific argument or perspective, then justifying it with evidence to lead to specific conclusions about the band. Incesticide forms the core of this work. It's one of only four album length releases issued during Nirvana's lifespan and with the personal involvement of Kurt Cobain. Yet, despite the forty or so books written about the band, Incesticide has barely received attention. This book attempts to correct that balance. A third of the book focuses exclusively on Incesticide, the other ten chapters use it as a starting point or component for wider discussions of the band and their work showing how unified the work of Nirvana was across their whole career, as well as features distinguishing each release and the intentions behind it. The book is now available for pre-order - simply email NirvanaDarkSlivers@gmail.com. The book is 10 plus postage & packing. The ebook versions will be available for just 6.99. NFC News NFC giveaway: Win a copy of brand new Nirvana book
Courtesy of Jawbone Press, we'll be giving away two copies of the brand new book: Entertain Us: The Rise of Nirvana by journalist and fellow Nirvana fan Gillian G. Gaar. Just published, the book traces the band's rise to fame, and their first album, "Bleach". Drawing on archive material and interviews with many key people in the story, the author traces Nirvana's formation, its early recordings and many personnel changes, and the arrival of Dave Grohl to complete the familiar three-piece line up. By critiquing every song the band recorded in this period, tracing influences and unpicking complex relationships between band members, associates and record labels, the author gets to the heart of a compelling story. Note: please only enter the competition if you have a mailing address in the US. Update! The competition has ended and the winners have been contacted.
